John Bishop took aim at Liz Truss while promoting his upcoming Christmas pantomime Mother Goose, which also stars Sir Ian McKellen.

During Wednesday’s edition of The One Show, the Doctor Who star discussed his all-singing and dancing production alongside the Lord Of The Rings icon.

Explaining the plot to presenters Jermaine Jenas and Lauren Laverne, Ian joked: ‘It’s about me really. I’m Mother Goose and this is my Home Secretary…. no, my husband.’

John added: ‘Well it is like being a Home Secretary, because it’s a story of a mother goose who finds a goose who lays a golden egg, and that sorts all their financial problems out, which apparently is a better economic policy than Liz Truss has found.

‘She’s been in touch and asked about the egg.’

John’s quip is in reference to people calling for the Prime Minister to step down just weeks into her premiership.

A number of Tory MPs have called for her to go after new chancellor Jeremy Hunt tore up almost all of her tax measures announced in the disastrous mini-budget which saw his predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng sacked after just 38 days.

Broadcaster Piers Morgan recently urged Ms Truss to resign following Mr Hunt’s mini budget announcement.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Resign @trussliz – it will be the only good decision you’ve taken as Prime Minister.’

Responding to a tweet from her account, he added: ‘Please, for the love of God, shut up. Nobody believes a word you say any more. Just go.’

Piers went on to say: ‘Britain deserves and urgently needs better than this ongoing clown show. If the Tories can’t get their act together asap and show the country proper leadership (not Truss) at a time of real crisis, they must call an election and let us decide who we want in charge.’

Mr Hunt unveiled part of his plan to stabilise Britain’s finances in a last-minute emergency statement on Monday morning.

Help with energy bills for all households will only last until April, rather than the two years previously promised.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
