Ed Sheeran had already started writing his James Bond theme for No Time To Die when he was replaced by Billie Eilish, he has revealed.

The Bad Habits chart-topper was in line to pen a song for the iconic spy film saga when Danny Boyle was attached to direct the most recent movie.

However, the filmmaker was later replaced by Cary Joki Fukunaga, and Eilish was then brought on board to write and record her Grammy and Oscar-winning anthem No Time To Die.

Explaining that he felt it was almost a rite of passage for any UK-born singer to be keen on doing a Bond song, Ed gave insight into just how far along he’d been with his until it was canned.

‘You’ve got to eventually as an English singer want to do a Bond song,’ he stated.

‘I was within a f**king gnat’s pube of doing one, and they changed directors, and then they just changed scripts and that was it – all the meetings, it was all done. I had started writing it.’

However, the 31-year-old star is still more than happy to take a second go at writing one in the future as he admitted how much it meant to him.

‘Yeah, of course. I’m not going to pretend it didn’t hurt not doing it. If they come back, I’ll be like, “Yeah, yeah, of course,”’ he added on That Peter Crouch Podcast.

However, Ed has ruled out the possibility of doing his own football song, instead heaping praise on Frank Skinner, David Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds’ classic Three Lions as ‘our national anthem’.

He also compared footie tunes to Christmas songs, insisting that ‘if you don’t have anything to offer that is going to be different or better, just don’t do it’.

The Shape Of You singer also recently explained the six-foot-two marble penis he gifted to Sam Smith, coincidentally a Bond singer themself for 2015’s Spectre with Writing’s On The Wall.

Wanting to one-up Eminem, who bought Ed’s long-time friend and mentor Sir Elton John diamond encrusted c**k rings for his wedding to husband David Furnish, the singer opted for a ‘massive marble penis’ for the icon’s birthday, which he said Sir Elton was ‘over the moon’ with.

Consequently, it’s become a bit of a thing.

Addressing how Sam then got their graphic statue on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Ed continued: ‘Sam was round my house, he was at a recording studio up the road, and Sam saw one of them and said, “Can I have one?”

‘And I said, “What would you like?” and Sam said, “One the size of me, one that’s six-foot-two.”‘

Well, fair enough then!
