The most peculiar side effect of the Activision Blizzard acquisition so far, is that Microsoft seems to know Sony’s secret release dates.

When Spider-Man developer Insomniac first announced they were making a Wolverine game they made it pretty clear it wasn’t going to be released any time soon, and certainly sometime after Spider-Man 2 – which is expected in the latter half of 2023.

The absolute earliest for Wolverine seemed to be 2024, but probably 2025, and yet a claim has been made, by no less than Microsoft, that it’s due out in 2023.

It’s another detail, like the claim that Call Of Duty won’t be coming to Game Pass, that’s only just been noticed in the fine print of their regulatory filing, with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

It could be a simple mistake, but the filing is a legal document and since the release date is such an easy thing to check it seems a peculiar error to make.

It’s always been unclear how much inside knowledge competing companies have about each other’s plans, but at the very least you’d expect Microsoft to have an accurate idea of what Sony is working on.

According to the information spotted by Tech4Gamers, Microsoft got everything else right about Sony’s 2023 line-up, including Spider-Man 2, Horizon: Call Of The Mountain, and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 16 and Forspoken.

Many of their other comments about the acquisition have been disputed but the most likely explanation here is the simplest: they made a mistake.

That said, Sony has been extremely secretive about its upcoming slate of games and apart from Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine it doesn’t have any other first party exclusives currently announced for next year or beyond.

Clearly it does have other titles waiting to be announced, but whether Microsoft secretly knows what they are will likely always be a mystery.
