Liz Truss’ reign as Prime Minister didn’t even last as long as Jedward in the live shows of The X Factor.

Or the last series of Love Island, Kim Kardashian’s notoriously short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries but she did match the number of days David Blaine dangled above the river Thames in a glass box so that’s… something?

There are many things that lasted longer than Truss’ time in Number 10, and among them is Jedward’s time entertaining millions each Saturday night on The X Factor in 2009 when they stayed in the contest until Week 7, eventually being booted out after a sing-off with Olly Murs – who has spent as long at number one as Truss spent as PM.

Addressing the PM’s abysmally short tenure compared to their X Factor stint, they said: ‘At least the public voted for us!’

True that – Truss was only elected by Tory members and with only 57% of the vote in the final stage against Rishi Sunak.

‘When it got to deadlock we still had more votes in the public vote,’ they continued.

‘There better be a general election and justice for the people after all this.’

As it stands there will be another Tory leadership election with the next Prime Minister decided by the Conversative Party MPs and Conservative Party MPs alone.

However, Jedward are far from alone in calls for a general election.

Even before Truss threw in the towel, more than 500,000 people signed a petition calling for a general election which YouGov polls predict would see the Tory party lose over 300 seats and put Sir Keir Starmer in Downing Street.

Truss’ resignation makes her the shortest-serving Prime Minister of all time with just 44 days in office under her belt.

The leadership election which put her in power lasted for longer.
