Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation earlier today, after only 44 days in office.
Which is exactly the same number of days David Blaine lasted in that box above the Thames.
Announcing her resignation, it seems Liz has managed to break a few records, the most prominent being the shortest serving PM (as well as the only PM to be beaten by a lettuce).
Her stint also managed to be shorter than a singular series of Love Island, as host Iain Stirling pointed out, shorter than Kim Kardashian’s notoriously short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries, and even – would you believe it – shorter than Jedward lasted in the live shows of The X Factor.
To refresh your memory, back in 2003, magician David was hoisted above the Thames in a 3ft x 7ft x 7ft Perspex box.
He only had water, and barely enough room to stand up and lie down, resulting in him emerging exactly 44 days later and 24.5kg lighter (and with heart palpitations and breathing problems).

Despite his temporary home of the small box being pelted with numerous objects throughout the stunt, it came to an end on October 19, (19 years ago yesterday) with the magician exiting the box in tears, declaring: ‘I love you all!’ to a crowd of onlookers.
It truly was an astonishing feat, with numerous articles since attempting to figure out how he did it, and if it was even real at all.
Liz’s time in office though, while it lasted the same number of days and broke headlines too, was definitely very real though, and saw Kwasi Kwarteng become the second shortest serving chancellor after less than six weeks in the job.

The PM brought her tumultuous 44-day premiership to an end after frenzied plotting among her own MPs, who lost faith in her ability to govern following a disastrous ‘mini-budget’ and days of chaos at the heart of government.

Now, a day after she said ‘I am a fighter not a quitter’, Britain is set to have a new leader within a week.
On the steps of Downing Street, the PM told the nation that she recognised, ‘given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.’
