Celebrities have reacted in shock, outrage and cheers as Liz Truss announced her resignation as Prime Minister after just six weeks.

The PM delivered a speech outside Downing Street on Thursday afternoon to announce that she was stepping down from the role after a disastrous short term, which has included crashing the economy and the departure of both her Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary.

In her statement, the outgoing minister said: ‘Given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.’

Reacting to Ms Truss’ announcement, Piers Morgan tweeted shortly before her speech: ‘It’s over. Liz Truss is resigning and will become shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history. What an absolute shambles.’

The Uncensored host then reposted a previous tweet he wrote which read: ‘Memo to Tories: Kick out Truss, let @RishiSunak be PM, keep @Jeremy_Hunt as Chancellor, make @PennyMordaunt Home or Foreign Secretary – and pretend the last 40 disastrous days never happened.’

He added today: ‘This needs to happen asap.’

Match of the Day host Gary Linker wrote: ‘Another Prime Minister resigns. Would you fracking believe it?’

John Bishop was particularly incensed by the developments and said: ‘WTF !!! And they think they can just get another Tory in !!! Unacceptable.’

The announcement was triggering for Richard Osman who quipped: ‘No-one used to resign until I resigned from ‘Pointless’. Now they’re all at it. I think I made it cool.’
