Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway is stunned by reports suggesting Boris Johnson could make a fresh leadership charge to return as Prime Minister weeks after being ousted in favour of Liz Truss.
Ms Truss – who succeeded Boris on September 6 when he was forced out in disgrace – lasted 44 days in office, and quit just 24 hours after telling MPs she was a ‘fighter and not a quitter’.
On Friday’s episode of the ITV breakfast show, Susanna Reid opened the broadcast outside Downing Street with a scathing introduction.
She said: ‘Welcome to a special programme from Downing Street. Well, Liz Truss promised growth, growth, growth and now she’s gone, gone gone. She promised she was a fighter, not a quitter, and now she’s quit.’
As the show has gone on, Kate and her co-host Adil Ray expressed ‘bewilderment’ over the situation amid reports Boris could be set for a sensational attempt to get back into No. 10.
‘I think there’s a sense of bewilderment this morning as to what has happened,’ Adil said of Ms Truss’ exit. ‘Although we kind of maybe thought we’d get to this stage for the last few days, there was rumours she might resign. But now it’s happened, it is just disbelief.’

And Kate added: ‘It is extraordinary to think, you look at the front page of the Telegraph, “Boris Johnson tells Tories: I can save party from election wipeout”. Barely a couple of months ago, he was ousted by the same Tory party for being unfit to lead, and Liz Truss put in place.
‘Now he’s offering an olive branch to Rishi Sunak, according to the Daily Telegraph, to come back as a dream team.’

‘I mean, what the holy heck?! That’s all I can say really,’ she said, while Adil agreed: ‘There are no words. It’s extraordinary. Some people will say it’s very unlikely they’ll get a hundred votes, but it is a possibility!’
Potential leadership candidates must have nominations from 100 of the 357 Tory MPs, who vote on Monday.
Unless they unite around a single candidate, 172,000 party members will decide between the top two in a secure online ballot after a possible TV debate, with the winner named by the end of next week.
In her statement on Thursday, Liz Truss said: ‘I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party.’
She revealed she had talked to King Charlies III and resigned, but would stay until her successor was elected by next Friday at the latest.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
