Even Hollywood heartthrobs’ best-laid plans can go awry, which actor George Clooney has proven by recounting popping the question to wife Amal Clooney.
The Ocean’s Eleven actor, 61, said he had the whole evening planned out, when he decided to ask the Lebanese-British lawyer, 44, to marry him.
George‘s plan was for Amal to discover the ring at dinner while music from his aunt Rosemary Clooney played.
As soon as the tune started, he had asked her to reach for a box containing a lighter to re-light a candle.
During his appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the Ticket to Paradise star revealed the romantic moment didn’t quite go to plan, though, revealing that Amal originally thought the ring was for a former flame.
‘I go, “I think there’s a lighter, could re-light the candle…I think there’s a lighter in that little box”,’ the actor said. ‘And she pulls this thing out, this little drawer, and there’s a diamond ring in there.’

‘She looks at it and she’s like, “There’s a ring in there…”, somebody left a ring there years ago.’
At this point, George was down and one knee and his now-wife, whom he married in 2014, still hadn’t said yes.

‘I literally said, “Listen, I really would like to marry you but I also am not young, and I’ve been on my knee now and I could lose a hip”.’
Amal eventually said yes, of course, and the rest is history.
‘I didn’t want to get married; I didn’t want to have kids. And then this extraordinary human being walked into my life and I just fell madly in love,’ George told E! News previously.
‘I knew from the minute I met her that everything was going to be different.’
Life has granted the Hollywood star at least one more milestone he jokingly calls a ‘disaster,’ which was the moment he learnt they were expecting not just one baby but twins, Alexander and Ella, when he was in his late fifties.
