The Great British Bake Off fans in the US couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the controversial method for making beloved dessert s’mores.

Baking viewers caught up with the long-running programme, presented by Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding, on Friday when it landed on Netflix but were left in utter shock by what they witnessed.

The contestants were making spooky treats for Halloween week, including creating an apple cake for the spine-tingling signature and a hanging latern bake for the showstopper.

But the technical challenge set by Paul Hollywood, which saw the bakers produce eight s’mores, has sparked outrage among US viewers, who have said the recipe is inaccurate.

It comes shortly after the cooking competition series was blasted for its harmful stereotyping of Mexican culture which left many Americans absolutely appalled.

In the lastest ep of the Channel 4 programme, the remaining cooks, who include Star Baker Abdul, are told to whip up the classic treat with digestive biscuits, marshmallow and chocolate ganache in an over.

On Twitter, viewers have been flabbergasted by the ingredients and the cooking method, with one remarking: ‘I have never ever ever screamed at the screen while watching #GBBO but FFS Paul … s’mores are made over the fire with Graham crackers—preferably the chocolate drips mixes with the marshmallow.’

What #gbbo is doing to s’mores seems as blasphemous as what they did to tres leches.
