Warning: Major spoilers for The Power of the Doctor ahead.

Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker has officially bowed out as the 13th Doctor, taking on enemies of old in her final episode, The Power of the Doctor.

But it wasn’t only old enemies, including The Master (Sacha Dhawan), the Daleks and the Cybermen that fans saw returning to their screens – old friends of the Doctor’s, with some even dating back to the very first episodes of the BBC sci-fi, made their epic returns.

We already knew about the return of iconic companions Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Ace (Sophie Aldred).

But, as showrunner Chris Chibnall had promised us, there were big surprises in store.

Here are all the cameos and epic returns.

Peter Davison – Fifth Doctor

Peter famously played the Fifth Doctor, from 1981 to 1984.

He returned to the show alongside his fellow Doctors as their incarnations, appearing to the 13th Doctor as fragments of her former self.

Fans were also left emotional at his sweet moment with returning companion Tegan, with the pair sharing the screen again after four decades, and the Doctor reviving his catchphrase: ‘Brave heart, Tegan’.

Colin Baker – Sixth Doctor

Colin played the Sixth Doctor from 1984 to 1986.

Years later, the actor clearly still has a great fondness for the role, often speaking out about it, and returning alongside his fellow Doctors.

Sylvester McCoy – Seventh Doctor

Sylvester starred as the Seventh Doctor from 1987 to 1989 and became the final Doctor of the original run.

He also shared the screen with returning companion Ace (Sophie) 35 years after their first scenes together, and the special sees the companion returning to her affectionate nickname for the Doctor: ‘Professor’.

Paul McGann – Eighth Doctor

Paul is known for playing the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 TV film.

He returned alongside his fellow stars, meaning all of the living classic Doctors were seen on screen for Jodie’s final story.

David Bradley – First Doctor

While the First Doctor was played by the late William Hartnell, actor David has since taken up the mantle, first playing Hartnell and the Doctor in the docu-drama An Adventure in Space and Time.

David went on to play the First Doctor in the 2017 episodes The Doctor Falls and Twice Upon A Time, which saw the first official appearance of Jodie as the 13th Doctor, meaning he has book-ended Jodie’s run as the Doctor.

Janet Fielding – Tegan

Tegan teamed up with fellow companion Ace (Picture: Nigel Ramdial)

Tegan had a huge role in the Power of the Doctor, teaming up with fellow returning companion Ace, alongside Unit’s Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave).

She first appeared in Doctor Who in 1981, in the Fourth Doctor’s (Tom Baker) final serial, and continued to make regular appearances until 1984.

Tegan also has a long history with The Master, who also returns in the special, after her aunt was killed by him.

Sophie Aldred – Ace

Ace also made her comeback (Picture: James Pardon/BBC Studios)

Teaming up with Tegan is Ace, who was a companion to the seventh Doctor and appeared in the sci-fi from 1987 to 1989.

Originally appearing alongside Sylvester, she was the final companion of the original run.

William Russell – Ian Chesterton

There was even a throwback to the first episodes of Doctor Who with Ian Chesterton (Picture: BBC)

Fans were even treated to a throwback to the first ever episodes of Doctor Who with the brief appearance from Ian, a companion of the First Doctor.

He appeared alongside Hartnell in the very first series of the sci-fi, from 1963 to 1965.

Bonnie Langford – Melanie Bush

Alongside Ian, we saw the return of Mel, a companion of the Sixth and Seventh Doctors.

She came just before Ace, as the penultimate companion of the classic series.

Katy Manning – Jo Grant/Jones

Also returning was Jo, a companion of the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) and an employee of UNIT.

It’s not the first time she’s returned to the franchise, also making an appearance in The Sarah Jane adventures in 2010.

Jemma Redgrave – Kate Stewart

It’s not only classic stars to have returned in Power Of The Doctor, however.

UNIT boss Kate, also known as the daughter of the iconic Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney), first appeared in the franchise in 1995, when played by  Beverley Cressman, but Jemma first played her in The Power of Three in 2012 (a story written by outgoing showrunner Chris).

Fans are absolutely thrilled to see her back in business.

Bradley Walsh – Graham

Graham couldn’t stay away (Picture: BBC Studios/Ben Blackall)

Graham, a companion of Jodie’s 13th Doctor, hasn’t been long gone, departing last year alongside grandson Ryan (Tosin Cole).

However, he was back to his best in The Power of the Doctor, finally meeting Dan (John Bishop) and getting to know his fellow companions

Jo Martin – The Fugitive Doctor

Completing the cameos is Jo Martin as the Fugitive Doctor (Picture: BBC)

Also making a brief return was The Fugitive Doctor, who Jo first played in Fugitive of the Judoon.

The Power of the Doctor is available for catch-up on BBC iPlayer.
