Carly Simon has paid tribute to her two sisters following their ‘haunting’ deaths from cancer, just one day apart.

The You’re So Vain singer, 77, lost Lucy and Joanna Simon this week, according to a report from the New York Times.

Broadway composer Lucy, 82, died from metastatic breast cancer on Thursday, October 20, while eldest sister Joanna, who was an opera singer, reportedly died at the age of 85 a day earlier on Wednesday, October 19, following a battle with thyroid cancer.

Carly and Lucy used to perform together as folk duo called the Simon Sisters from 1964 until 1969, when Lucy left the band to get married.

The trio were the daughters of Richard L, Simon, who was the co-founder of the Simon & Schuster Inc book publisher, as well as a classical pianist, while their mother, Andrea, was a ciivil rights activist and singer.

Speaking about her loss for the first time, Carly said she is ‘filled with sorrow.’

‘I am filled with sorrow to speak about the passing of Joanna and Lucy Simon. Their loss will be long and haunting,’ the musician told People.

However, despite her heartbreak, the New York-born star wants to ‘celebrate’ the life of her sisters.

She continued in her statement: ‘As sad as this day is, it’s impossible to mourn them without celebrating their incredible lives that they lived.

‘We were three sisters who not only took turns blazing trails and marking courses for one another, we were each other’s secret shares. The co-keepers of each other’s memories.’

Carly also reflected on being the only surviving child of her parents, as her photographer brother, Peter Simon, died in 2018 at the age of 71, after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

‘I have no words to explain the feeling of suddenly being the only remaining direct offspring of Richard and Andrea Simon,’ Carly said.

She added that her sisters ‘touched everyone they knew’ and that ‘those of us they’ve left behind will be lucky and honoured to carry their memories forward.’

Carly is set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next month, alongside Dolly Parton, Eminem, Duran Duran, Lionel Richie and more, in celebration of her success after the Simon Sisters disbanded.
