James Buckley has said he avoids using public urinals after being approached by one-too-many eager fans of his hit show The Inbetweeners.

The show ran for three series with James – famous for playing foul-mouthed teenager Jay Cartwright in the popular sitcom – starring alongside Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, and Blake Harrison.

It also inspired two films, books, a US version of the show, and a 10th-anniversary reunion episode titled Fwends Reunited.

Although he is always happy to meet fans he doesn’t appreciate it when he is stopped mid-flow at the urinal by people who want to talk to him about the show.

‘I don’t feel comfortable enough to use a urinal anymore,’ the 35-year-old said on the Headstrong podcast.

‘I haven’t used one for years, I’ve always got to go to a cubicle because it has happened, I’m there with it out and people are trying to talk to me about The Inbetweeners. I’m like, “Do you want to give me 30 seconds…”‘

Despite it being tricky for him to use public toilets, the actor said that the majority of fans he has met have been lovely and want to share their love of the show.

However, James – who is one of the top-earning celebrities on the video messaging service Cameo thanks to his Jay-esque insults – doesn’t think he’ll ever get used to being recognised in public.

He said he has never considered himself famous, and that being recognised ‘feels very off’.

‘I just wanted to be an actor, more specifically I just wanted to make people laugh on television,’ he said.

‘I didn’t really consider that there might be a chance that people would recognise me if I walked down the street.

‘It’s not something that I really thought too much about at the time. It is a bit odd. I don’t want people to have a preconception of me. People are usually just very disappointed when they meet me.’
