Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway kept putting their foot in it during an interview with Chris Tarrant on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, making for an extremely awkward watch.
The former Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? presenter, 76, joined the ITV hosts towards the end of the programme, where he was quickly made aware of his long-tenure in broadcasting.
‘You started in TV eight years before the current Prime Minister was born,’ Garraway pointed out, referring to new leader Rishi Sunak. ‘How extraordinary.’
‘Yes, alright,’ Tarrant replied, giving somewhat of an eye-roll.
Continuing to dig herself a hole, Garraway added: ‘No! That’s more of a factor of how young he is.’
‘No! It’s a matter of how dull and old he is!’ Madeley chipped in before adding that he started in television in the same year that Tarrant did in 1972.

Clearly unimpressed by the theme of the interview, Tarrant replied plainly to Madeley: ‘Really? I always thought you were a lot older than me?’
‘Ay?’ Madeley, 66, asked, with Tarrant doubling down on his response: ‘I always assumed you were.’
In a desperate attempt to skip past the awkwardness, Madeley then told a joke. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, it’s his birthday. He’s 70 years old today and he doesn’t look it. You used to!’
Viewers were left cringing by the interaction, with one person noting: ‘This was nothing more than embarrassing to watch.’
‘Chris Tarrant is in a bad mood today, argumentative isn’t he,’ observed another.
A third simply put: ‘Good grief!’
Elsewhere in the interview, Tarrant admitted he hadn’t watched Jeremy Clarkson’s version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.
‘I did 700 shows and I only watched two of them, so why would I watch Jeremy’s [version]?’ he asked.
‘I don’t watch game shows. I watch Netflix, Sky Sports, dramas, that’s it really. That’s about 24 hours.’
He also told the pair that he has housed a family of three Ukrainian refugees in his home for the last eight months and has recently bought them a flat.
‘I’m getting them a flat soon that I’m paying for or whatever because I really want them to be closer to the city centre,’ he said.

‘They have enhanced my life these people. The baby… I mean I know I’ve had my own kids but this baby is so sweet. She was seven months, now if she had stayed she’d be on the front of a tank or something!’
‘I mean the idea of what happened and how they got away is just extraordinary,’ Tarrant added.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
