Kim Petras makes history as first publicly trans singer to get Billboard number one in charts with Sam Smith collaboration-Rishma Dosani-Entertainment – Metro
An amazing achievement!
Kim Petras has made history in the charts thanks to her new song with Sam Smith, Unholy.
The 30-year-old teamed up with Sam – who is non-binary – for their new collaboration, which has already soared to the top of the charts.
After the pair hit the peak, she has become the first publicly trans performer to get a number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
The official Twitter account for the brand confirmed the news in a tweet, celebrating: ‘@samsmith and @kimpetras are the first publicly non-binary and transgender artists, respectively, to earn a No. 1 song on the #Hot100, thanks to “Unholy.”’
Discussing the reaction that the track has received so far, and the news that she is the highest-charting publicly trans artist in the chart’s history, she shared her hopes that she will not be the last.
‘I just really don’t want to be the last,’ she told Billboard. ‘There’s always been incredible and talented trans artists, and they have been paid dust, you know?

‘That same story just keeps repeating over and over for trans girls who have been making exceptional music and have been pushed under the rug while someone else takes credit from them.
‘I’m just happy that Sam gave me the chance to shine here. I hope I can help break the cycle — it feels like people are finally ready for us to succeed, and that fills me with a lot of joy.’
Honey Dijon and Ts Madison were initially the first trans artists to make it into the top 40 in the chart, thanks to their work on Beyonce’s track, Cozy.
Kim, who underwent gender reassignment surgery at 16, has previously spoken out over the reception she receives from both fans and executives, and explained that she wants to be looked at for her music instead of her gender.

In a conversation with Metro.co.uk, she said that she wanted to steer conversations towards her music career instead.
‘I’m very proud of being transgender and always a transgender activist. I always care a lot,’ she told us.
‘But at the same time, I want to be taken seriously. And I want to I want to just be like any other artist, to be judged on the quality of my music, and not on my gender.

‘I’m still proving that it can be done.’
‘When I was going to all the major labels, just every conversation would suddenly be about being transgender instead of the music,’ she added. ‘And I hated that because I’ve worked on the music for years, and I’m really proud of the songwriter that I am now.
‘And, you know, it’s been a lot of hard work, and hundreds and hundreds of songs that I’ve written and that I’ve improved myself.’
