Ruth Jones has shared her experiences with James Corden after the actor and presenter was banned from a restaurant for his treatment of staff.

The pair have been close pals since starring on Fat Friends together between 2000 and 2005, but James, 44, came under fire this week after being accused of being ‘abusive’ to a staff member at Balthazar in New York.

Owner Keith McNally had briefly banned James, claiming he had been ‘extremely nasty’ to his employees on two separate occasions.

While Ruth did not address the incident directly, she told The Sun about James’s emotional nature when the pair had worked together on Gavin and Stacey

She explained: ‘He is a very emotional guy. We had this hug and he was crying.

‘He mumbled something and I went, “What? I’m really sorry, I can’t understand what you’re saying”.

‘And he kept mumbling, and I said (loudly), “What?” and he said (loudly), “I would be lost without you.”’

Following the story going public, James had initially claimed he’d ‘done nothing wrong’ but later apologised to restaurant staff on Monday’s Late Late Show, explaining: ‘Because I didn’t shout or scream, I didn’t get up out of my seat, I didn’t call anyone names or use derogatory language, I’ve been walking around thinking that I haven’t done anything wrong.

‘But the truth is I have made a rude, rude comment. And it was wrong. It was an unnecessary comment, it was ungracious to the server.’

He said he had reached out to the owner immediately to apologise and would go and say sorry to the staff in person if he was allowed to go back.

James added: ‘I also hate, as I said to the owner that day, that I’ve ever upset anybody ever. It was never my intention. It just wasn’t. I love that restaurant. I love the staff there.

‘I hope I’m allowed in again one day so when I’m back in New York I can go there and apologise in person, which is something I will absolutely do.’
