Sky News’ political editor Beth Rigby suffered an awkward gaffe about the Queen and Rishi Sunak live on air.

The former Chancellor has been confirmed as the country’s latest prime minister after Liz Truss quit following just 44 days in office, during which she crashed the economy.

As per protocol, Sunak, who has made history by becoming the first British-Asian Prime Minister in British history, met with King Charles III on Tuesday, who formally appointed the 42-year-old head of His Majesty’s Government.

Beth was reporting the events for Sky News, as Sunak, who is also the youngest PM in some 200 years, made his way to Buckingham Palace for a reception with the new monarch.

The journalist said: ‘Rishi Sunak is about to become the Prime Minister. He’s just about to have his audience with the Queen,’ momentarily forgetting Her Majesty had died at the age of 96 on Thursday, September 8.

Not realising the mishap, Beth continued: ‘I was writing about it last night. It feels like something out of the West Wing, doesn’t it? The drama, the plot twists, the infighting.

‘I mean you couldn’t make it up in terms of art imitating life if you like or life rather imitating art.’

While the polls have suggested the UK is divided over the new Conservative Party leader, Naomi Campbell is very much in support of Sunak, to the surprise of her followers.

In an Instagram post that has since been deleted, the 52-year-old wrote: ‘Yeah!!! #Rishi Sunak @rishisunakmp our #UK minister!! Now this is right!! He has all the qualifications to do this… I hope you will be a prime minister for all us all the people. Historical day in United Kingdom. A Diwali we will never forget. #happydiwali #diversity #inclusion [sic].’

The post included a photo of the new PM with ‘Happy Diwali. Love from, the Prime Minister’ written around it.

Campbell added in her Instagram stories alongside a photo of Mr Sunak: ‘YESS!! THIS IS RIGHT!!’

As well as the fashion icon, world leaders have reacted to Sunak’s new position, with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky taking to Twitter to congratulate him, wishing him success at home and abroad.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, offered his ‘warmest congratulations’ to Rishi Sunak and ‘Special Diwali wishes to the ‘living bridge’ of UK Indians.’

The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also tweeted her congratulations to Rishi Sunak but made it plain there was still a lot of work to be done with the UK, both in terms of the UK’s relationship with Europe and the security situation across the continent, talking about ‘testing times.’
