Michael J Fox has opened up about the ‘struggles’ he has faced in the last year, and his determination to come out of the other side.

The Back To The Future icon – who recently had an emotional reunion with co-star Christopher Lloyd – was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991.

Since then, the 61-year-old has been raising awareness and calling for more research into the condition.

He recently took a step back from the spotlight, but has suffered a number of injuries and setbacks over the last few months.

In a new interview, he revealed that, while he is ‘feeling it a little bit more’, his recovery is progressing.

‘It got worse, I broke my cheek, then my hand, then my shoulder, had a replacement shoulder put in and broke my [right] arm, then I broke my elbow,’ he said. ‘I’m 61 years old, and I’m feeling it a little bit more.’

Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, more than three decades ago.

He has been open about how it’s impacted his life – and opened the Michael J Fox Foundation, which is ‘dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through funded research and ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson’s today’.

The Stuart Little star revealed that his condition, coupled with his recent injuries, has affected his optimistic outlook.

‘I was never really a cranky guy, but I got very cranky and short with people,’ he continued to People Magazine. ‘I try to nip it in the bud.

‘I always think of these aides who work with me. And I often say to them, “Whatever I say, just imagine I said “please” at the beginning and “thank you” at the end. Just take a second and absorb that I might have said that if I was more myself, but I didn’t, so I apologize.”’

Discussing his recovery, Michael shared that the last of his injuries are healing up, and he is also ‘walking steadily again’.

‘The whole mission is: Don’t fall down. So whatever works to not fall down, whether it’s a walker or a wheelchair, a cane, a guy with a belt around my waist holding onto it – I use all those tools,’ he added. ‘It’s been a struggle, but I’m happy.

‘I say that because I hope on some level people can find happiness in spite of what they’re going through.’
