This Morning host Phillip Schofield reunited with Gordon the Gopher, his sidekick from The Broom Cupboard.

The Broom Cupboard was the nickname given to the very first CBBC studio where presenters sat up until 1994, when they moved into a proper studio.

The first Broom Cupboard aired back in September 1985, with Phil presenting the new slot in front of a tiny control desk.

Andi Peters also presented in the little studio, as did Andy Crane and later Zoe Ball.

Phil, as well as reuniting with Andi and Andy, was joined by Gordon, the yellow puppet, in celebration of BBC marking 100 years.

Speaking to Gordon, who squeaks, Phil said: ‘There is a real treat.

‘Yeah, I feel exactly the same. Have you been busy? No, so so.

‘The cactus juice farm going well? Family good? Yeah, that’s good.’

Phil presented The Broom Cupboard alongside Gordon from 1985 to 1987, before being replaced in 1988 by Andy and puppet Edd the Duck.

Gordon first appeared on This Morning in 2010, for Phil’s 25th anniversary of first presenting CBBC.

As part of a segment on the ITV show to mark the BBC’s centenary year, Phil also opened up about how he often got into trouble when presenting the children’s show.

He said: ‘The first time I realised how much trouble you could get in by saying something I thought was quite innocent was when someone wrote in and said, “I’m going to the dentist,” and I said, “Ooh, I hate the dentist.”

‘I got thousands of letters from mums saying, “Do you have any idea how much power you have and you have just said that to my child?”

‘It was like, “OK, you’ve got to take that on board.”‘

Phil went on to host Saturday morning show Going Live! with the gopher and Sarah Greene.

What’s more, Gordon had a series named after him on CBBC, BBC One and BBC Two from January to March 1981, lasting 13 episodes.

In 2005, Phil appeared on ‘Room 101’ and attempted to consign Gordon to the past, but the audience opted against sending the gopher to the fictional location.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
