Gangs of London star Joe Cole has promised Sean Cole is a ‘new man’ after details about his explosive return are unveiled in season 2.
The Peaky Blinders actor was shot in the face by undercover cop Elliot Finch (Sope Dirisu) at the end of season 1 and presumed dead by his family and fans of the violent Sky drama.
But after his brother Billy (Brian Vernel) unwittingly starts a gruesome attack in Billingsgate Market in a bid to avenge Sean’s ‘murder’, his sibling swoops in and saves him from drowning in a nearby lake.
The start of episode 3 reveals exactly what happened when Sean was attacked, with Kurdish freedom fighter Lale (Narges Rashidi) arriving swiftly at the scene and employing her medics to save his life.
But with Sean’s life dangling in the balance in the back of her van, another car viciously crashes into the side of it, with the driver grabbing a semi-conscious Sean and taking him elsewhere.
Sean is taken to a torture camp and locked in a cell as shady police officer Joseph Singer (Cornell John), who had previously imprisoned Elliot in season 1, interrogates him about the investors.
After enduring relentless violence, Sean eventually agrees to help Joseph by bringing back the Wallace empire from the ashes to relinquish control of London from new villain Koba (Waleed Zuaiter).

Reflecting on Sean, the 33-year-old told Metro.co.uk: ‘The guy has been through so much in season one; he’s out of his depth. He’s the youngest son of a crime boss. He’s emotional. He’s looking for his father’s killer. He’s he doesn’t know what world he is in and he’s a hothead.
‘In this season, he’s been shot in the face. He’s figured out who his dad is. He’s had all these atrocities happen to him. He’s killed all these people.

‘In the beginning of season 2, he’s been in a torture camp. So I was like, “There’s a new man”. There’s a new character almost, and as an actor, it was a real joy to step into this crazy world of Gangs of London and play somebody who’s just completely different.’
Joe described the new Sean as more ‘cutthroat, measured and cold,’ but remained tight-lipped about how his new allegiance would play out.

The Skins star previously told Metro.co.uk that he had originally signed a one-season deal for Sean but as season 1 progressed the team felt he had more to tell.
He explained: ‘He was going to commit numerous atrocities across London and then get his just desserts at the end.’

‘But as we moved through the story and the arc during filming there were these quiet conversations about perhaps leaving it a little more ambiguous.’

After deciding to leave an open ending, Joe said the team warmed to the idea of his return as ‘as an attempt of an epic surprise and something fun for the fans’.
