Ever since Yoda made his big screen debut in the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, fans have pondered over a certain attribute of the character.

The legendary Jedi Master, who is said to be of an ‘unknown species’, has always had a proclivity for speaking in unique manner, reversing the order of sentences such as when he said: ‘Named must be your fear before banish it you can,’ and: ‘The greatest teacher, failure is.’

Other characters from Yoda’s species are rarely seen in Star Wars, so fans weren’t sure whether Yoda’s tendency to speak in ‘riddles’ was unique to him, or a trait shared with his kin.

However, that mystery appears to have been solved in the new Star Wars animated anthology series Tales of the Jedi, in which Bryce Dallas Howard voices Yaddle, who is also of Yoda’s species.

Following the launch of the show on Disney Plus on Wednesday October 26, a clip has circulated on social media showing Yaddle speaking, where she says: ‘No, I do not, but the wisdom of the council is to be cautious until we know more.’

As is apparent from the clip, Yaddle does not speak in the same way as Yoda, with one person on Twitter remarking that as Yaddle ‘speaks normally’, this means Yoda ‘is just a goofy little goblin talking in riddles for the fun of it’.

Of course, who’s to say what speaking ‘normally’ means? As for all we know, Yaddle could be the one who speaks in a different way to the rest of her species.

Nonetheless, several fans have taken this revelation as proof that Yoda simply spoke the way he did for fun, rather than because that’s how all of the beings in his species also talked.

Grogu, otherwise known as Baby Yoda, is yet to speak in The Mandalorian or The Book of Boba Fett, having only been able to communicate verbally using noises at his young age so far.

Several Twitter users commented on this discovery from Tales of the Jedi, with one writing: ‘Yoda has just skyrocketed to my favourite Star Wars character by this information alone lol.’

‘Yoda is just a weird little guy confirmed,’ someone else said, while another commented: ‘This is like the funniest lore build for Star Wars. Yoda just talks like that on purpose. He’s just a funny little riddle guy.’

Yaddle has previously been seen in the Star Wars universe, making her film debut in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, although she didn’t have any lines in her scene with the Jedi High Council.

This week, Bryce – who’s directed episodes of The Mandalorian – celebrated her debut as Yaddle in Tales of the Jedi, thanking the show’s creator Dave Filoni ‘for making this dream come true’.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi is available to watch on Disney Plus.
