The Crown star Sir Jonathan Pryce has voiced his ‘disappointment’ at ‘fellow artistes’ over their reaction to the upcoming season.

Season five of the Netflix drama is set to premiere on November 9, however the latest series has been met with intense scrutiny due to the storylines that will play out, which include the death of Princess Diana and fictionalised claims that the then Prince Charles tried to enlist Prime Minister Sir John Major to persuade the Queen to abdicate.

Dame Judi Dench and Sir John have expressed their distaste for the Royal programme, with Dame Judi writing an open letter for a disclaimer to be added, while Sir John branded the series as a ‘barrel-load of nonsense.’

Sir Jonathan, who stars as Prince Philip alongside Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II), shared that he understood Sir John’s expressing his ‘disquiet’, but was still saddened by the backlash.

‘I’m hugely disappointed by my fellow artistes,’ he said.’

‘The vast majority of people know it’s a drama. They’ve been watching it for four seasons,’ he added to Deadline.

Following Dame Judi’s request, the show’s description read: ‘Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatisation tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign.’

Other actors joining The Crown for its new series include Lesley Manville, who replaces Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret.

Elizabeth Debicki is replacing Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, and Dominic West portraying King Charles III (then Prince Charles), taking over from Josh O’Connor.

In recent photos for season six, The Crown have been filming scenes leading up to the Princess of Wales’ death.

The snaps sparked fierce backlash, with one person declaring that the show had gone ‘too far’.

‘Filming where Diana tragically lost her life is not entertainment,’ they blasted. ‘Her children, her family, shouldn’t be subjected to this. ⁦@netflix⁩, shame on you.’

The Crown season 5 premieres on Netflix on November 9.
