Duncan Bannatyne was forced to address complaints from users of his health clubs after he turned down the temperature of his swimming pools by a single degree.
The Dragons’ Den star, 73, had received tweets from users of his gyms, including one who wrote: ‘@DuncanBannatyne do you really think by making your swimming pools too cold to use and steam rooms non steamy will save the environment?’
He took to Twitter to reply: ‘My swimming pool temperatures are set at 28[degrees] which is certainly not too cold to use.’
The Twitter user then asked: ‘So in that case @DuncanBannatyne why are your staff saying the temperature has been turned down to protect the environment?’
Duncan confirmed that changes had been made as a result of the cost of living crisis and the sharp rise in energy prices, in order to be able to afford to keep the pool open.
He explained: ‘They were turned down 1 degree to help us combat the energy crisis. Some other clubs have closed pools or hot tubs. Many clubs & leisure centres will close during the next few months.’
Duncan revealed to one follower who asked if clubs were not opening due to ‘environmental or financial reasons or both’: ‘Um. The cost of energy to heat pools has quadrupled in costs. Sometimes more.’
There are currently 69 Bannatyne Health Clubs open which can cost up to £70 a month to join, and one member queried whether they could cancel heir membership in light of the pool being too cold, to which Duncan replied: ‘The water is not cold.’
At the end of September, Bloomberg reported that many gym and health club chains were shutting down certain facilities amid the rapid rise in energy prices.
The government later announced an energy price cap for businesses from October 1 for an initial period of six months, with certain companies qualifying for more support, including a discount of around 50% on wholesale prices.
