Matthew Perry has revealed that he woke up ‘covered’ in his own faeces after needing to use a colostomy bag when his colon ruptured.

The actor, 53, is opening up in his upcoming memoir, writing frankly about his battle with addiction.

He also recently landed himself in hot water after name-dropping Keanu Reeves in the book and questioning why the actor was alive while Heath Ledger was dead.

Perry swiftly apologised for the remarks, which surfaced after extracts of his upcoming autobiography were released.

Now more details have been revealed from the pages of Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which is released on November 1.

In the latest set of quotes, Perry revealed that, in 2018, he had to use a colostomy bag, then an ileostomy, after his bowel ruptured following an opioid overdose.

As reported by GQ, Perry wrote: ‘I needed a colostomy bag that didn’t break. I woke up covered in my own s***, I’m talking 50 to 60 times.’

Colostomy and ileostomy bags are given to patients whose bowels are severely damaged or cannot function in their usual healthy way, either because of illness or physical trauma.

Perry was fitted with the bag after an opioid overdose caused his colon to burst, leaving him in a coma for two weeks.

He explained in further detail how a typical morning would go while getting used to a colostomy bag, and then having to get used to an ileostomy bag.

‘I would wake up, the bag would have broken again and I had s*** all over my face, my body. When it breaks, it breaks. You have to get nurses.’

An ileostomy bag is very similar to a colostomy bag, but is usually fitted much higher up in the digestive system – in the ‘ileum’, which is where it gets its name.

He described the ileostomy as ’10 times worse. You have to deal with an ileostomy bag 18, 19 times a day. A lot of suicides with an ileostomy bag. People can’t take it.’

Another prominent public figure with a colostomy bag is radio presenter Adele Roberts, who had the bag fitted during her battle against stage two colon cancer.

She was declared cancer free in June of this year, but still uses a colostomy bag and refers to her stoma (the part of her intestine attached to the bag) as ‘Audrey’.
