Antiques Roadshow viewers couldn’t believe their eyes nor their ears when they discovered the value of an original Batman costume.
In a segment known as Basic, Better, Best, items are ranked in order of value from lowest to highest, and even host Fiona Bruce was in disbelief by the value of one Batman collector’s treasures.
Filming outside Wollaton Hall, Steve Layne showcased some of his most valued memorabilia from the franchise, with the location extremely fitting given that the Hall was once Wayne Manor, home of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in the Dark Knight rises.
Displaying three items from the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film, the memorabilia collector began with a Batman mask, worn by Michael Keaton.
‘What’s really important about this is that everybody knows and recognises the Bat cowl, it’s so distinctive, it has really an iconic shape and finish to it. It was designed by Academy award nominated costume designer Rob Ringwood,’ collector Steve explained.
However, the Bat cowl was actually a production cowl, so wasn’t worn on screen, but it remains ‘very rare,’ since most others were destroyed before filming began.

The Batman mask came in at ‘Basic’ with a value of £4-6k which, for basic, is still rather high!
In the middle under ‘Better’ was a belt worn by Michael Keaton, which went around his suit.
Different styles of belts were made for different shoots, and given that this one had screen-time, it’s value was a whopping £40-60k, which earned a gasp from the crowd.

The pièce de résistance, however, was a Joker suit worn by the one and only Jack Nicholson, who everyone agreed was ‘perfect’ casting for the famous role.
Offering some trivia on the suit, Steve shared that the colour purple in the suit was actually a particular shade, because it’s the colour of the LA Lakers, the actor’s favourite basketball team.
Oh, and the value, we hear you ask? Only £100-150k!

‘We get things like Roman rings on this programme that aren’t worth anything like that!,’ declared host Fiona, with viewers at home in total shock.
‘Off to see if there’s anything lying around my house in a box perhaps randomly worth £100,000,’ one person tweeted.
