Rylan Clark has wished Scott Mills the best of luck as the former Radio 1 DJ joins the team at Radio 2 for the first time today.

Scott, 49, joined Radio 1 in 1998 and presented the breakfast show until 2004, when he moved to the afternoon slot after standing in for DJ Sara Cox.

During his lengthy stay with Radio 1, he also hosted the Chart Show – first on Sunday afternoons, then on Friday evenings from 2018.

He will now host the 2-4pm slot on Radio 2, after he replaced DJ Steve Wright, whose In the Afternoon show had been on the air from 1999.

And Scott’s new station-mate Rylan had only glowing things to say about him, writing that he was proud to call Scott a friend.

In a tweet posted earlier this morning, Rylan said: ‘Today, my friend Scott Mills starts his brand new BBC Radio 2 show.’

He continued, praising Scott’s achievements in radio: ‘Not always do people get what they deserve in this industry, but thankfully he has.’

Rylan then signed off by praising his friendship with Scott, after the pair became friends after Scott stood in for Rylan during parts of 2019.

Referring to Scott by an affectionate nickname, Rylan said: ‘You deserve the world, Scott, and I’m very proud to call you a friend. Always. Good luck, Judith.’

Scott responded with a message of his own, and also revealed his own affectionate nickname for Rylan: ‘You’re the best. Love you, Monika.’

Rylan joined BBC Radio in 2019, going straight to Radio 2 after also standing in for Zoe Ball and he’s hosted on Saturday mornings since.

When confirming his exit in July, Scott became emotional on air, telling listeners: ‘When you sign up to Radio 1, you always know at some point you’re going to leave.’

He finished off his closing statement by saying: ‘I’m also feeling a little bit in denial that this is actually happening, but apparently it is.’

Reflecting on his time at Radio 1, Scott revealed that he had listened back to some of his earlier shows and hadn’t been pleased with what he heard.

He said: ‘Some of the pranks feel quite mean, a kind of punching-down humour that was popular at the time.’

Listen to Scott weekdays at 2pm on BBC Radio 2.
