There’s so much to unpack.

Let’s dive into The White Lotus episode 1 (Picture: HBO/Getty Images/Backgrid)

The HBO drama that was only ever intended as a one season coronavirus regulation friendly production is back again with a sizzling season 2.

The first instalment of The White Lotus, created by Mike White and starring the inimitable Jennifer Coolidge, was a piercing critique of class structure and the wealthy.

It followed a group of elites as they holidayed in an exclusive Hawaiian resort, failing invariably to recognise their privilege and establish real connection beyond material objects and status.

Season 2 features a brand new cast, aside from Jennifer’s unhappy heiress Tanya McQuoid, who check into another luxury resort, this time in Taormina in Sicily.

Much like the characters in the first season, the vacationers are all uber prviliedged but this time White, who also wrote The School fo Rock, examines the currency of sex, lust and how it can weaponised.

The first episode of season 2 opens with Daphne Babcock (Meghann Fahy) discovering ‘bodies’ on an idyllic beach before we’re taken back in time to find out the events that lead up to the deaths.

In the hour-long instalment, we meet three generations of the Di Grasso family Bert (F Murray Abraham), Dominic (Michael Imperioli) and Albie (Adam Di Marco), who represent one extreme of masculinity to another.

Meanwhile, Daphne’s husband Cameron (Theo James) has invited ex-college roomate Ethan Spille (Will Sharpe) and his disapproving wife Harper (Aubrey Plaza) on holiday, as locals Mia (Beatrice Grannò) and Lucia (Simona Tabasco) run amok.

Tanya is also returning to a White Lotus, presided over by manager Valentina (Sabrina Impacciatore) but this time with husband Greg (Jon Gries) and PA Portia (Haley Lu Richardson).

Now the main cast have been introduced, here are all the questions we had after watching season 2 episode 1.

Who are the dead bodies?

Similarly to its predecessor, The White Lotus season 2 kicks off with the revelation that there has been a death, but unlike season 1, there are multiple bodies.

Daphne, who wades out into the crystal blue sea, discovers the bodies while taking a dip, so we can rule out her, but it could be pretty much any other guest.

While hotel manager Armond (Murray Bartlett) ultimately met his demise in the first instalment, we also see Valentina at the scene of the crime, expressing dismay the bodies could damage the resort’s reputation. Who could they be?

Is something brewing between Cameron and Harper?

In a scene of sheer brilliance, Harper and Ethan cannot contain their astonishment that Cameron and Daphne don’t watch the news as the couples fail to find common ground.

Meanwhile, Cameron and Daphne exchnage glances over Harper’s uptight and judgemental demeanour over an excjrutiating conversation over Aperol Spritz.

However, events take an unexpected turn when Harper and Cameron return to a room to fetch suncream and the finance bro strips off fully in Harper’s eyesight. Do we detect some sexual tension?

What’s the deal with Tanya’s new husband Greg?

Something is very wrong in this marriage, from Tanya taking her PA Portia on holiday with her, to Greg fat-shaming her over eating macorrrons.

Then there’s that sex scene where Tanya pushes Greg off her because she starts seeing weird visions of strange men and her husband with ‘snake eyes.’

Towards the end of the episode, we also see Greg take a rather shady phone call, claiming it was ‘work’. We smell a rat.

Who else will run into Lucia and Mia?

Sassy Lucia and her quieter pal Mia sashay into The White Lotus like they’ve always belonged there, and we’re living for it.

We know Lucia is a sex worker, who is employed by Dominic for company after his wife and daughter refuse to vay-cay with him due to his infidelities.

However, we suspect this won’t be the last we see of Lucia and Mia. Who else might they become embroiled with?

Are those creepy masks telling us something?

As Daphne, Cameron, Ethan and Harper check in to their very plush rooms, they enquire about the mask statues that are scattered around the resort.

The obliging hotel staff tell them it’s from an old fable about a man who beheaded his wife’s lover and paraded the head for all to see.

Several character remark on the masks, while towards the end Cameron is fixated at the statue as he lies in bed. Could this be foreshadowing the deaths?

The White Lotus continues on Monday on Now and Sky Atlantic in the UK and on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday in the US.
