Tom Daley has recalled the ‘very surreal’ conversation he had with King Charles III, when the royal took a surprising interest in his knitting endeavours.

This year, the diver was appointed Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2022 New Year’s Honours for services to diving, LGBTQ+ rights and charity.

The 28-year-old received his honour from then-Prince Charles at Windsor Castle – but the royal was apparently keen on discussing Tom’s extracurricular knitting hobby, rather than his athletic or charitable achievements.

On Monday’s Lorraine, Tom recollected his meeting with the now-monarch, telling Lorraine Kelly how the conversation flowed.

‘It was very surreal, because the things he was talking about, he was talking about knitting,’ he said, as Lorraine chuckled in surprise.

‘Some of the people I’ve had conversations about knitting with… it’s very odd. But it was very surreal. But I think he has something to do with British wool or something.’

Tom added that a lot of his knitting is made from 100% merino wool, which is made in Britain.

Having won gold with his diving partner Matty Lee at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Tom recently opened up on the potential future of his athletic career.

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday evening, he admitted that he hasn’t stepped back onto a diving board since the Olympics.

‘I think if you were to ask my coach and ask me, there would be two different answers,’ while discussing the prospect of getting back into diving shape.

‘But, what I’m gonna do is go back to training, see how I feel, because I love diving, but then I’ve done so much within the sport that I don’t know if I want to keep going… I do want to keep going because I love it, but it’s like this balancing thing.’

The athlete, who shares a son with his husband Dustin Lance Bl;ack, added that he enjoys spending time with his family ‘and not having to travel as much’.

‘There’s a lot of stuff to think about,’ he stated.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
