Bruce Springsteen has no plans to put his feet up just yet despite selling his back catalogue of music for a reported $500million.

The singer, 73, sold the rights to his music to Sony Music Group in December for a reported $500million (£435million) but says he made the decision based on ‘timing’ rather than wanting to retire.

Bruce revealed on Sirius XM’s Howard Stern show: ‘I just got to a point in my life where, you know, I’m 73 years old and it was going to Columbia [Records] who I knew was going to take really good care of it.

‘And so it was just a timing thing and it was like, “ok it makes sense.”’

The deal is reportedly one of the biggest single-artist catalogue deals to date, and Bruce admitted it was ‘absolutely’ about recognising the monetary value of his work.

He added: ‘I bumped into the luckiest job in the world because they pay you a fortune for something that I would have done for free.’

Bruce, known as The Boss, might have made enough money to never have to work again, but is not planning to give up performing any time soon.

Famed for his lengthy shows – often running up to five hours long – Bruce says it would only be ill health that would stop him from getting on stage.

He explained: ‘I mean, if I got to a point where I was incapacitated or something… But up until then, I mean, look at Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger.

‘I played with Pete Seeger in Washington, at [Barack] Obama’s inauguration. Pete was 91 or 92, and he came out and sang This Land Is Your Land.

‘So I look at those guys… I don’t know if I’ll be doing three-hour shows [when I’m older] but I have so many different kinds of music that I can play and do. So I can’t imagine retirement, no.’

The musician has won many awards including 20 Grammys, an Oscar and a Tony, and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as being awarded the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were also announced as the first headliners for the British Summer Time 10th anniversary festival in 2023, marking his debut at the festival on July 6, with a second show on July 8, among a series of stadium gigs on the UK leg of his tour.
