Tom Brady has opened up about his divorce from ex-wife Gisele Bundchen, days after it was finalized.

After intense speculation surrounding their relationship, the pair announced that their 13-year marriage had come to an end last week.

While they both insisted that the separation was ‘amicable’ and they were making sure to put their children first, the supermodel explained that they had ‘grown apart’.

Speaking in a new episode of his SiriusXM podcast, Let’s Go! With Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray, the NFL star reflected on splitting in such a public way.

‘I think there’s a lot of professionals in life that go through things that they deal with at work, and they deal with at home,’ he began. ‘The good news is it’s a very amicable situation and I’m really focused on two things, taking care of my family – and certainly my children – and secondly, doing the best job I can to win football games.

‘That’s what professionals do. You focus at work when it’s time to work, and then when you come home, you focus on the priorities that are at home.

‘All you can do is the best you could do. That’s what I’ll just continue to do as long as I’m working and as long as I’m being a dad.’

When asked if he found it challenging to compartmentalize between the two, the athlete continued: ‘I think that’s what being a professional is. I’ve dealt with a lot of challenging situations on and off the field over 23 years, and a lot of it does play out in front of a lot of people.

‘I think the interesting thing for a football player – or an athlete in general – is [that] you’re out there. I always say we’re not actors, even though we’re on TV, that is our real self out there. We’re trying to do our best.

‘That’s how people really have got to know me over the years, by being on TV. And that is an authentic self, that’s out there to compete with my teammates every day.

‘And you’re giving all you can to the team, and everyone’s going through different things. We all have our unique challenges in life. We’re all humans. We do the best we could do.’

Tom explained that he had learned a great deal from his own parents, before adding: ‘I want to be a great father to my children and always try to do things the right way as well. And to deal with things in your life that have challenges, you want to deal with them in the best possible way.

‘I want to always be able to hold my head high on and off the field, and I’m going to try to continue to do that for as long as I’m here.’

Tom and Gisele first started dating in 2006 after they were set up on a blind date, and announced their engagement three years later.

They tied the knot for the first time in Santa Monica at the beginning of 2009 and later hosted a second wedding in Costa Rica in April of the same year.

Gisele gave birth to their son Benjamin, in 2009, and later welcomed daughter Vivian, in 2012 – while the Super Bowl winner is also dad to son Jack from a previous relationship.

There was intense scrutiny over their marriage in recent weeks, before the Devil Wears Prada actress confirmed that they had decided to go their separate ways.

‘With much gratitude for our time together, Tom and I have amicably finalized our divorce,’ she wrote on Instagram. ‘My priority has always been and will continue to be our children whom I love with all my heart.

‘We will continue co-parenting to give them the love, care and attention they greatly deserve.

‘The decision to end a marriage is never easy but we have grown apart and while it is, of course, difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always.

‘I kindly ask that our privacy be respected during this sensitive time.’

Tom also shared a similar message on his own account, insisting their decision to end their marriage was filled with gratitude.

‘In recent days, my wife and I finalized our divorce from one another after 13 years of marriage,’ his statement read. ‘We arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together.

‘We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who will continue to be the center of our world in every way. We will continue to work together as parents to always ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve.

‘We arrived at this decision to end our marriage after much consideration. Doing so is, of course, painful and difficult, like it is for many people who go through the same thing every day around the world.

‘However we wish only the best for each other as we pursue whatever new chapters in our lives that are yet to be written. And we kindly ask for privacy and respect as we navigate what is to come in the days and weeks ahead. Thank you.’
