A British esports team has managed to take home more than £7.4 million after placing first in Dota 2’s world championship.

This year’s Dota 2 world championship, The International, saw professional British esports team Tundra Esports bring it home, after destroying Team Secret in the finals with a 3-0 score.

The team not only lifted the trophy, named Aegis Of Champions – which looks and sounds like something out of House Of The Dragon – but also claimed the huge monetary prize of over £7.4 million.

The competition boasted a total prize pool of over £15.5 million, meaning that the winners got to take home almost half of it, leaving the rest to be divided amongst their runners-up.

While the last few iterations of The International have seen a lot of underdogs getting crowned champions, that wasn’t exactly Tundra Esports as they performed quite well from the get-go.

The team first beat Team Secret in the upper bracket final, and in the first game they even let them have Leshrac, which was a hero they had shown they knew how to handle throughout the tournament.

Team Secret wasn’t an easy foe to overcome, as they had come close to winning in 2021 and 2019, placing third and fourth, respectively.

Through the rest of the matches against Team Secret, Tundra went on with the same strategy, which proved to be fruitful against the former’s insistence on picking Leshrac.

Team Secret got to take home over $2.4 million (⁓£2.1 million), which is a sizeable amount, but they’ll still be disappointed after coming so close to it year after year.

Although Tundra Esports is a London-based esports organisation, its Dota 2 roster is made up of players from around the world, namely Wu Jingjun, 27 from the US; Oliver Lepko, 24 from Slovakia; Leon Kirilin, 24 from Germany; Neta Shapira, 25 from Israel; and Martin Sazdov 27 from North Macedonia.

There were 19 other teams competing in the initial stage of The International, with the competition having kicked off on October 15.

All the players reportedly trained for up to 12 hours per day, but now they should be able to sit back and relax for some time, after scoring such a big win.

Even though The International had some intense moments, the event didn’t go by without trouble, with some fans, as usual, voicing their grievances.

Taking place all the way in Singapore, many fans of the game tuned in to watch its official stream during the grand finale.

However, they missed the big moment as the official stream jumped back 10 minutes, leaving viewers in the dark as Tundra Esports took home the top prize.
