Migos’ record label has revealed Takeoff died after being hit by a stray bullet.
The Bad and Boujee rapper, real name Kirsnick Khari Ball, died in Houston on Monday at the age of 28 when a shooting took place at a bowling alley where he had enjoyed an evening with his uncle and Migos group member Quavo and dozens of other friends at a private party.
Houston Police confirmed that Takeoff died at the scene while two others, a 24-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, were taken to hospital with injuries but are expected to make a full recovery.
Authorities are currently seeking information from witnesses and do not have a suspect in custody.
Footage from the incident has been shared on social media and shows the moments before Takeoff was shot, in which he appeared to be standing by peacefully while an argument unfolded between others in the group.
Migos’ record label Quality Control has spoken out for the first time since the incident, releasing a statement which said: ‘It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the loss of our beloved brother Kirsnick Khari Ball, known to the world as Takeoff.
‘Senseless violence and a stray bullet has taken another life from this world and we are devastated.’
It added: ‘Please respect his family and friends as we all continue to process this monumental loss.’
The police department held a press conference on Tuesday and confirmed they have launched an investigation into his death.
Police Chief Troy Finner said: ‘Once officers arrived, they came up on a male who was deceased. That male has been identified as Kirshnik Ball, better known as Takeoff. He’s a member of the Migos rap group, out of Atlanta.

‘I got many calls from Houston, and outside of Houston. Everyone spoke of what a great young man this is, how peaceful he is. What a great artist. I’m calling up on everybody, our hip-hop artists in Houston and around the nation.
‘We’ve got to police ourselves. There are so many talented individuals, men and women, in that community, who I love and respect. We all need to stand together and make sure that nobody tears down that industry.’
Footage has also emerged of the moment gunfire opened amid the crowd, as well as Quavo trying to help his nephew as he lay motionless on the floor after the shooting.
Takeoff was a founding member of Migos alongside Quavo and Offset. The rap group rose to fame when Drake featured on a remix of their 2013 hit Versace before going on to enjoy success with hits such as Bad and Boujee, MotorSport, Stir Fry and Walk It Talk It.
Migos have earned two number one albums on the US’ Billboard 200 chart and topped the Hot 100 chart with Bad and Boujee.
Tributes have poured in from all corners of showbiz, with Drake – their longtime friend and collaborator – sharing a poignant message on Instagram which said: ‘I got the best memories of all of us seeing the world together and bringing light to every city we touch. That’s what I’ll focus on for now 😔 rest easy space man Take[off].’
