Nadine Coyle has wowed fans with a powerful cover of The Cranberries’ hit track Zombie.
The Derry star, who first gained recognition on Ireland’s Popstars as a teenager before becoming a certified icon through her work with Girls Aloud, took to the stage this week to perform a moving rendition of the 1994 track.
Made famous by the raw vocals of the late Dolores O’Riordan, the Limerick band’s track was recently voted Ireland’s favourite song in a bid to create The Ultimate Irish Playlist on national broadcaster RTÉ.
Taking to the stage on Tuesday night, Nadine said before her performance: ‘[The Cranberries] are just iconic. What a huge Irish band.
‘I’m always so proud when I go out and do things and people say “you’re from where The Cranberries are from!” It is one of my absolute favourite songs.
Cranberries singer O’Riordan died tragically in 2018, with Nadine going on to pay tribute to her by saying: ‘We all wish Dolores was here and could do it herself. But I just feel it’s going to be ok.’
Nadine’s slightly more stripped-back version seriously impressed viewers on the night, with many noting her voice came across as completely different from her Girls Aloud days.
‘Love the woman to absolute bits but jesus I never would have expected Nadine Coyle to do such a cracking cover of Zombie,’ one majorly impressed fan said.
Another said that while the ‘iconic’ original version will always be the best, ‘both Miley Cyrus and Nadine Coyle each put their own spins on it and did a great job,’ after the former Disney Star performed a cover in 2020 which impressed the Cranberries themselves.

‘My faith in the nation restored,’ one wrote. ‘Amazing rendition of #zombie by the Cranberries by Nadine Coyle on #UltimateIrishPlaylist tonight.’
‘To be entirely fair to Nadine Coyle, that was magnificent,’ one person wrote, adding that there’ll always be ‘flak’ from people who think they’re experts, but ‘you could clearly see how much work she put into that performance.’
The haunting track decries the violence seen in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, with O’Riordan inspired to pen the track after the horror IRA bombing in Warrington which left two children dead.
Despite its bleak content, the song has remained hugely popular in the almost 30 years since its release, and has now been officially crowned the greatest Irish hit of all time.
The death of acclaimed singer and lyricist O’Riordan in January 2018 shocked her fans around the world, as well as her friends, family and bandmates.
Throughout a career that spanned across an extraordinary two decades, The Cranberries became a multiplatinum rock group that ended up with worldwide success.
O’Riordan wrote her first song, Calling, at the age of twelve, and immersed herself in Ireland’s music scene where she met Noel, his brother Mike, and Fergal who later formed the iconic 90’s band.

After splitting in 2003, The Cranberries reunited in 2009, and in 2019 released their final album, In The End, which featured vocals from O’Riordan taken in the weeks before she died.
It was later determined at an inquest that the musician died from drowning due to alcohol intoxication.
