People are only just releasing why women’s buttons are on the left hand side and it’s blowing their minds

WHEN it comes to fashion these days the rules of what’s for men and what’s for women are fair game. 

But, men’s’ and women’s’ shirts still have one thing that keeps them separate, and that’s buttons.

When you’re sorting out the washing – whites away from colours, delicates wash from your normal – have you ever noticed women’s buttons on shirts are on a different side to mens? 

It’s something a lot of people miss or would have not known about unless you’re borrowing your partner’s shirt or borrowing one to wear yourself. 

And it’s not just shirts, anything buttoned be it dresses or skirts are on the left. 

One Twitter user wrote: “I *just* found out that shirt buttons are on the left for women and right for me. Wtf!!!!”

This small detail has a lot of history and a practical use behind it. 

One of the theories is that hundreds of years ago wealthy women didn’t dress themselves but had servants or “lady’s maid” to do it for them.

Knowing that someone else would be doing the unbuttoning, dressmakers would sew buttons onto the left hand side of ladies clothes.
