Twenty years ago we were introduced to hit zombie film 28 Days Later and its new breed of rabid, blood-spitting ghouls.

The film, directed by Danny Boyle, sees Jim (Cillian Murphy) wake up from a coma, though the world is not as he remembers it as he stumbles around a hauntingly-desolate London.

He soon realises that the world has succumbed to a virus that turns humans into manic, flesh-eating zombies – a far cry from the shuffling undead audiences were used to seeing from the likes of Night Of The Living Dead.

Promised a cure by the military, he teams up with lone wanderer, Selena (Naomie Harris), and father and daughter Frank (Brendan Gleeson) and Hannah (Megan Burns) to make their way to safety.

It immediately received critical and box-office acclaim becoming one of the most profitable horror films of 2002.

The film was followed by the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, a graphic novel titled 28 Days Later: The Aftermath, and a comic book series titled 28 Days Later.

Now, 20 years after the film’s release, both Boyle and Murphy are keen to revisit the franchise with a third film.

Despite being 20 years older, Peaky Blinders star Murphy said he always mentions the notion of a third 28 Days Later film when he bumps into Boyle or the film’s writer, Alex Garland.

‘I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it,’ he told NME.

‘It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me.’

Boyle revealed Harland penned a potential third film, 28 Months Later, years ago and that he was tempted to direct the project.

‘It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered “Bang, this script!” which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?’ he said.

The pair reflected on the film as it reached the milestone anniversary, with Boyle saying he instantly knew the film was ‘very special’ after reading just 10 pages of Garland’s script.

Both Boyle and Murphy believe the film wouldn’t be made now following the September 11 terrorist attacks and the change in security in cities.

‘The world changed after [we finished shooting] because of the September 11 terrorist attack,’ Murphy explained.

‘We’d have never got access to Westminster Bridge, put half a fucking bus down there by Number 10 [Downing Street] now. We had total access. That would never happen now. That time is gone.’
