Well, if the Exorcist can do it.

No one expected Terrifier 2 – an indie slasher about a killer clown stalking children – to become such a widespread box office hit, but absolutely no one predicted it for Oscars glory.

That was until it was actually submitted for consideration at the Academy Awards 2023.

Audiences in the US have been quivering, vomiting and, apparently, shaking with fear after watching the horror blockbuster, which sees the return of Art The Clown – from 2016’s Terrifier – as he stalks and terrorises a teenage girl and her younger brother on Halloween night.

Terrifier 2 has proven to be even more popular than its predecessor, clocking up an impressive 89% rating in Rotten Tomatoes, a notoriously difficult feat for any horror movie. Cinema-goers have also been left ‘vomiting’ by the gory scenes.

It’s now been announced that Terrifier 2 could be in the running for an actual, real golden Oscar with producers submitting the slasher for consideration very appropriately on October 31 aka Halloween.

Announcing the exciting news in an Instagram video, the team wrote: ‘The most dangerous movie since The Exorcist is coming for The Academy. Well, guess what? Terrifier 2 has been submitted for Oscar consideration. Bring back entertainment to the Oscars. #OscarsForArt.’

They added in the caption: ‘You’ve considered it. Now they should. We’ve submitted Terrifier 2 for an Academy Award! Bring back entertainment to the Oscars. #OscarsForArt #ForYourConsideration #FYC #academy #academyawards #Oscars.

Fans naturally welcomed the move, with one applauding: ‘Yess about time Art gets a Academy Award.’

Another weighed in: ‘The way I would literally lose my mind if this got nominated.’

‘As he should! Best slasher ever ,’ another joined in while another declared: ‘Best horror movie of 2022 without a doubt.’

However, not everyone was feeling so optimistic about the film’s chances, with one writing: ‘Sadly them old folks who are in charge of the Oscars won’t ever let anything as cool as this into their choices, let alone other good horror films which aren’t even violent but just scary n fun to watch!’

Another fan agreed: ‘Its a great idea, but it won’t happen. Just look at the Rock N Roll Hall of Shame.’

Horror movies notoriously fare badly when it comes to Oscars recognition with less than 20 winning awards in the awards’ 94-year history.

However, some of the most notable triumphs include Get Out winning best original screenplay in 2017, Kathy Bates winning best actress for her performance in Misery, The Exorcist scooping two for best sound and best adapted screenplay, Alien winning best visual effects in 1979 and, of course, The Silence of the Lambs winning five Oscars for best picture, director, actor, actress, and adapted screenplay in 1991.

Terrifier mania has swept across the US where it was released in cinemas, with viewers hailing it as one of the scariest films they’ve seen.

One cinemagoer shared a photo of their pal being tended to by medics as they wrote: ‘#Terrifier2 my friend passed out and the theater called an ambulance. Highly recommended.’

Another added: ‘A film festival is giving VOMIT BAGS for people going to watch Terrifier 2. you’ve got my attention. you’ve got all of my attention. completely. tell me more.’

It has now finally been made available to rent, buy and stream in the UK via Amazon Prime Video and Sky Store.
