Keanu Reeves was baffled by Matthew Perry’s bizarre digs at him in his new memoir, it has been claimed.

The Friends actor has made headlines over his book, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, in which he opened up about his addiction struggles while playing the iconic Chandler Bing.

Also in the pages, the 53-year-old raised eyebrows over his comments regarding the Matrix star in two separate passages – which he was later forced to apologize over.

In one extract, he reportedly penned: ‘Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?’

Matthew also recalled the moment he learnt his friend Chris Farley had died of an overdose in 1988 at age 33, in another, while making a reference to his fellow Hollywood star.

‘I punched a hole through Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall when I found out,’ he continued, before adding: ‘Keanu Reeves walks among us.’

The comments didn’t go down well with fans, who questioned why he was taking aim at Keanu out of the blue.

An insider has claimed that the Speed icon was confused by the mention, which he reportedly thought ‘came out of left field’.

‘Keanu thought the comments came out of left field,’ a source told Us Weekly.

‘It’s kind of backfired on Matthew anyway, which is why he had to apologize.’

Matthew did issue an apology after facing criticism for naming Keanu in such a bizarre way in the book, with many branding the move ‘unnecessary’.

‘I’m actually a big fan of Keanu,’ he insisted to Deadline. ‘I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize.

‘I should have used my own name instead.’

Matthew candidly shared his struggles with alcohol in his new offering, reflecting on how he attempted to hide his addiction from his Friends castmates.

In an interview to promote the memoir, he told Diane Sawyer that it was Jennifer Aniston who confronted him about his issues while filming.

‘Jenny said “We know you’re drinking.” Imagine how scary a moment that was.

‘She was the one that reached out the most and I’m really grateful to her for that.’

He added: ‘At the time I should have been the toast of the town. I was in a dark room meeting nothing but drug dealers and completely alone.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted Keanu’s reps for a comment.
