The Sainsbury’s Christmas advert 2022 has arrived, with the retailers getting into the festive, competitive spirit in order to rival the iconic short films John Lewis releases on an annual basis.

This year, the supermarket has enlisted the talents of This Morning megastar Alison Hammond, who co-hosts the ITV programme alongside Dermot O’Leary, for a fairytale-themed tale.

While watching the ad unfold – which sees Countess Alison express her displeasure after being presented with a traditional Christmas pudding by a chef – some people may be wondering what song is playing in the background.

It’s actually a very well known tune, but has been stripped back to just its instrumentals with a medieval twist.

Did you realise what the melody was straight away?

What’s the song playing in Alison Hammond’s medieval Sainsbury’s Christmas advert 2022?

Anyone with a good ear might have realised that the song playing in the Sainsbury’s Christmas advert was none other than Teenage Dirtbag, but without the lyrics.

The tune, which originally came out 22 years ago, was a global hit, peaking at number two in the UK at the time.

With a chorus that goes: ‘I’m just a teenage dirtbag, baby. Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me,’ we’re not sure the lyrics would have fit in well in Queen Alison’s court.

However, the sound of the music on its own is a perfect fit for the joyful advert, which sees Alison eventually give her approval to a caramelised biscuit Christmas pudding.

So in a way, the twist on a classic Christmas dessert matches well with a twist on a timeless 2000s track.

Who sang Teenage Dirtbag?

Teenage Dirtbag is a song by American rock band Wheatus, from their eponymous debut album, which was released in 2000.

The tune was written by lead vocalist Brendan B Brown, who took inspiration from his own childhood for the lyrics.

‘It came from the summer of 1984 on Long Island, when I was 10 years old. That summer in the woods behind my house, there was a Satanic, drug-induced ritual teen homicide that went down; and the kid who did it was called Ricky Kasso, and he was arrested wearing an AC/DC T-shirt,’ he said in a 2012 interview with Tone Deaf.

‘That made all the papers, and the television, obviously; and here I was, 10 years old, walking around with a case full of AC/DC and Iron Maiden and Metallica – and all the parents and the teachers and the cops thought I was some kind of Satan worshipper. So that’s the backdrop for that song.’
