Alison Hammond has admitted she ‘struggled’ to breathe in her Masked Singer costume – and teased the idea of chasing a Christmas number one next year.
During Sunday night’s I’m A Celebrity special of the secretive star-studded talent show, the This Morning presenter was revealed as Witchetty Grub and brought the house down with her cracking cover of Moving On Up by the M People.
She appeared on Monday’s episode of the ITV daytime favourite and told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby about her struggles on the show.
She said: ‘It was a cute character but I’m gonna be honmest with you, it was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever had to do. Mainly because if you look at the costume, there’s a head inside another glass head.
‘The amount of oxygen I had inside – it was like zero, I was really struggling. I had to literally play it down.
‘Those moves you saw me doing, that’s all I could do ’cause I just wasn’t physically capable to sing, be in those two heads and dance as well.’

As well as the physical side, Alison also had to deal with the Masked Singers’ usual level of secrecy which meant she was absolutely banned from telling anyone she was taking part.
‘Can you believe it, babes? You know what I’m like, I’m the worst one at keeping a secret but I did really well. You had to sign something and obviously there would’ve been legal proceedings if I told anyone, so that’s the main reason I told not a soul,’ she laughed.

‘I work with a lot of crew, so I see people I know. the main challenge for me was just – do not laugh. I knew if I laughed, straight away the crew would know.
‘I had to literally go into this meditation inside the suit and just breath through it if I found something funny.’
The crossover show marked Alison’s first time singing on TV since she appeared as Nina Simon on Stars In Their Eyes in 2004, but she isn’t planning on launching her own singing career.
‘I like a karaoke, but I was really nervous actually,’ she said. ‘No, Phil! That’s as far as it goes! But maybe, who knows, Christmas number one for next year? I think I’m gonna go for that… We’ll do it for some charity, and we’ll do a Christmas number one next year.’
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
