An incel interviewed for a documentary has detailed a harmful practice he partakes in involving a hammer that he believes will make him look more attractive, a concerning technique that he also preaches to others online.

For the All 4 programme UNTOLD – The Secret World of Incels, journalist Ben Zand met with several incels, which stands for people who are ‘involuntarily celibate’.

Many self-described incels have been accused of promoting misogyny, rape culture and dangerous ideologies, with several mass shootings having been committed by individuals from the community.

At one point in the documentary, a voiceover explained that there’s ‘a huge amount of content online dedicated to the black pill’, an idea ‘promoted by hundreds of social media accounts and forums, and within it, there even seems to be a solution for incels – something called “looksmaxxing”’.

‘So the black pill ideology essentially says that your looks, specifically your face, are going to have an enormous impact on your life,’ a masked incel said.

The man in question who Ben spoke to face to face was described as being ‘one of the UK’s most prominent black pill influencers’, who advocates ‘extreme techniques’ on social media.

The interviewee stated: ‘All the women in the world want the best looking men. If you understand the truth, you can then start to take actions to use it in your favour. It’s not uncommon for people in the looksmaxxing industry to get a hammer and you think, “Ok, what part of my face would I like to improve? My cheekbones, my jaw, my chin, my orbitals.”’

The incel demonstrated over his mask how he would use the hammer to tap on his face ‘up and down’, which he said in his view allowed people to ‘almost sculpt their face out of marble’, claiming that their bones ‘just grow’.

Ben immediately questioned the false effectiveness of the practice, replying: ‘I don’t know if that’s entirely true.

‘You know, I’ve fractured my knee for example and my knee is vulnerable to other breaks. But how do you know your bones [are] growing and your face isn’t just swelling up because you’re hitting yourself?’

The incel claimed the practice makes his bones ‘grow’, while Ben pointed out it was likely just swelling (Picture: All 4)

Ben tried to emphasise how much other factors other than appearance also play into attraction (Picture: All 4)

The incel alleged to have seen ‘long-term results’, although he also acknowledged that the swelling ‘does certainly stay around for a few days’.

Ben requested a further explanation as to why the man turned to using a hammer to hit himself in the face, with the interviewee saying that it was ‘just results’.

‘I wanted to be good looking, quickly, fast. It’s like walking down a street and you just see trainwreck after trainwreck after trainwreck because I know what good looking people look like. Just like that. The best looking people in society, they’re always treated the best. You’ve just got to open your eyes and see it,’ he replied.

Ben tried to drill in that attraction ‘isn’t just appearance’, as a person’s personality can also have an impact on how attractive they appear to other people.

However, the incel wasn’t to be convinced, retorting: ‘The exception doesn’t prove the rule. And you’re right, there are plenty of exceptions of people that aren’t necessarily good looking.

‘Unfortunately, you’re never going to know that about someone unless you find them physically attractive. You’ll never go and talk to them. If you’re ugly, I don’t want to look at you.’

The clip ended with Ben stressing in a voiceover: ‘Unsurprisingly, a lot of what he’s saying here is not supported by science.’

UNTOLD – The Secret World of Incels is on All 4 from Monday November 7.
