Jimmy Kimmel has been confirmed to host the Oscars next year.

The news was announced today ahead of the ceremony, taking place on March 12, 2023.

The 54-year-old is no stranger to the stage, having already taken over proceedings in 2017 and 2018.

‘Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap,’ the late-night talk show presenter said of the news.

‘Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no.’

‘We’re super thrilled to have Jimmy score his hat trick on this global stage. We know he will be funny and ready for anything,’ showrunners Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner agreed.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer, and President Janet Jang said: ‘Jimmy is the perfect host to help us recognize the incredible artists and films of our 95th Oscars.

‘His love of movies, live TV expertise, and ability to connect with our global audiences will create an unforgettable experience for our millions of viewers worldwide.

‘With Kimmel, Weiss and Kirshner’s fresh perspective and masterful guidance, the Oscars will celebrate its rich 95-year history, the collaborative nature of moviemaking, and our diverse, dynamic and deeply creative community of filmmakers.’

While Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded TV Streaming Originals added: ‘Having Jimmy Kimmel return to host The Oscars is a dream come true.

‘As we see every night on his own show, Jimmy can handle anything with both heart and humor, and we know that he will deliver the laughs and celebratory moments that define the Oscars.

‘We love being the home of Hollywood’s biggest night and can’t wait to toast the success of this year’s cinema and storytelling.’

Will Smith famously slapped Chris Rock on stage at this year’s ceremony (Picture: Getty)

This year’s ceremony was helmed by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes, and there was no shortage of jokes – or drama.

Will Smith infamously stormed onto the stage to slap Chris Rock for a joke he made regarding Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair, while presenting a trophy to Questlove.

The Fresh Prince actor returned to his seat but yelled at the comedian from the audience, warning him to stop speaking about the Scream 2 actress.

He later appeared on stage to collect his award for best actor, issuing a tearful speech on the accolade.

Will has since resigned from the Academy, and has been banned from the ceremony for 10 years.
