I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! viewers were dealt a huge blow this week when the bombshell news hit that Olivia Attwood had quit the jungle.

The former Love Island contestant was forced to leave camp due to a medical issue after less than 24 hours in the competition.

Olivia was able to take part in one trial before she left, winning some stars for camp, but it will be her last, with the star now set to be reunited with fiancé Bradley Dack much sooner than initially planned.

A spokesperson said on Monday: ‘As a precautionary measure Olivia needed to leave the jungle to undergo some medical checks.

‘Unfortunately, the medical team has advised it is not safe for Olivia to return to camp as there needs to be a further investigation.

‘She has been absolutely brilliant and she’ll be very much missed on the show.’

Since, Olivia’s team have said she’s ‘heartbroken’ and have vowed that she’ll reveal the ‘truth’ of why she had to leave ‘in due course’.

But who else has been forced to quit the jungle in I’m A Celebrity’s long history?

Danniella Westbrook (2003)

The first voluntary departure from I’m A Celebrity came during the show’s second season. After all nine contestants were either voted off or emerged victorious in 2002’s first season, people were expecting the 2003 edition to yield similar results.

However, former EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook walked out on day nine. Afterwards, she swore to never again do TV work that took her away from home.

That year, the competition was eventually won by former England cricketer Phil Tufnell, who is expected to appear on the I’m A Celebrity All Stars series in 2023 – the series has recently been filming in South Africa.

John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten (2004)

The former Sex Pistols singer entered the jungle during the year that became best known for the beginning of singer Peter Andre and model Katie Price’s long-running celebrity romance. Kerry Katona eventually won the series.

Lydon, 48 at the time, survived three rounds of elimination before leaving the camp of his own accord on the 11th day of the competition – just five days before Kerry, just 23 at the time, was crowned Queen of the Jungle.

While he was previously convinced that he was going to win the competition and ‘turn into Des O’Connor’, Lydon suddenly walked out, leaving his campmates and viewers at home stunned.

Brian Harvey & Natalie Appleton (2004)

It was a difficult year for music legends in 2004. After the first I’m A Celeb season of that calendar year saw John Lydon walk away from camp, East 17’s Brian Harvey and Atomic Kitten’s Natalie Appleton both quit during the second.

While Natalie cited pressures from competing in too many Bushtucker trials, it was apparently a spat with journalist Janet Street-Porter that finally made Brian’s decision to quit. Brian left having only competed one Bushtucker trial.

Elaine Lordan & Kim Davies (2005)

Both stars who left the jungle prematurely in 2005 were forced to because of serious medical issues. Neighbours actress Kimberly Davies fractured her ribs after jumping out of a helicopter during a Bushtucker trial.

Before that, on her first day in the jungle, Gimme Gimme Gimme and EastEnders actress Elaine Lordan was forced to quit after collapsing in the jungle – not once, but twice. The doctors found nothing untoward, but Lordan left anyway.

Camilla Dallerup, Katie Price, George Hamilton (2009)

Viewers waited four years for another celebrity to quit I’m A Celeb, then three came along at once.

First was Camilla Dallerup, who shouted the show’s iconic get-out phrase after struggling to cope with jungle conditions – a moment her co-star Kim Woodburn recently reflected on in her first I’m A Celebrity column for Metro.co.uk.

Returning to the jungle after five years away, Katie Price entered on day two, only to leave a week later after being nominated for every single Bushtucker trial. At the time, she said: ‘People can see I’m genuine. I just don’t want to be here any more.’

Actor George Hamilton walked less than a week before the final (which was eventually won by Gino D’Acampo), saying: ‘The last thing I wanted was to go one-on-one with people, I have too much respect for them.’

Nigel Havers (2010)

2010 is, of course, best remembered for being the year when Gillian McKeith, erm, fainted on live TV after being chosen to compete in yet another Bushtucker trial. It remains one of the iconic times that Medic Bob was called upon to save the day.

Before that episode, however, Nigel Havers found his own way of letting us know that he’d had enough of the show. On the ninth day in camp, he refused to do a Bushtucker trial after discovering he would be receiving electric shocks.

After being persuaded to briefly return to the show, he was informed that he would have to spend time in the camp’s ‘jail’ for ducking out of the task. It was at that point he decided to leave.

Freddie Starr (2011)

In 2011, Freddie Starr wowed viewers when he ate more than his fair share during a live Bushtucker trial, but he collapsed in camp after suffering a severe allergic reaction and was told not to return by doctors.

Freddie, who was 68 at the time, said: ‘I was sick not to finish the show. I wanted to be there until the very end but there’s no use crying over spilt milk.’

Brian Conley (2012)

We can all sympathise with Brian’s reason for leaving in 2012 (Picture: PA)

Upon entering the jungle, TV presenter, singer, and comedian Brian Conley stopped taking antidepressants for the first time in 15 years. While in camp, he admitted to struggling without them, describing his time on I’m A Celeb as a ‘living hell’.

Looking back on his exit, he’s since explained: ‘I started feeling really bad, and very shortly after that I did have to leave. I found out I was [malnourished] and I was suffering from exhaustion, that’s what the doctor said.’

He added: ‘I felt bad because it was out of my control, it was their decision… I couldn’t lie to them [about not taking the antidepressants].’

Gemma Collins & Craig Charles (2014)

Different circumstances resulted in Gemma and Craig leaving the jungle prematurely (Pictures: Gemma Collins/Getty)

The Only Way is Essex star Gemma Collins left I’m A Celebrity for the rather simple reason that she simply just didn’t enjoy the experience. You can’t say fairer than that! She was honest with her campmates and she was honest with viewers at home.

Craig Charles went on to leave the show in the same series under tragic circumstances after finding out that his brother had suddenly died back home in the UK. Craig left camp immediately after being informed and went to be with his family.

Spencer Matthews & Lady Colin Campbell (2015)

An ‘error in judgement’ caused Spencer Matthews’ departure from the show in 2015 (Picture: ITV)

Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews left the show following an ‘error of judgement’ regarding steroid medication and promptly left the show.

He later explained to Glamour: ‘I had intended to come off the pills gradually, but there was no time to do this before I reached the jungle.

‘My admission to the production team that I was still taking these pills led to the conclusion that it would be unsafe for me to stay in the jungle – a decision which I found extremely hard to stomach.

‘I pushed back but ultimately the show’s duty of care prevailed and bags had to be packed. Taking these pills was a serious error of judgement, which I hugely regret.’

12 days later, Lady Colin Campbell left the camp after becoming one of the most notorious and controversial contestants in the show’s history. She got embroiled in a memorable row with entrepreneur Duncan Bannatyne and singer Tony Hadley.

The royal biographer then left camp on medical grounds, eventually finishing eighth in the competition.

Jack Maynard (2017)

Controversial tweets resulted in Jack Maynard leaving the jungle prematurely (Picture: ITV)

Jack Maynard, brother of singer Conor Maynard, left camp very suddenly on just the third day of the series in 2017 after controversial headlines about his past social media activity, including a 2011 tweet he posted joking about rape, caused him to leave camp in order to respond.

The YouTuber said at the time: ‘I’m sorry to anyone that I upset, anyone that I offended, anyone I made feel uncomfortable.

‘Growing up I was all over social, my entire life was on social media and through that it led to be my job.

‘I’ve tweeted some bad things, some horrible things, that I’m just ashamed of.

‘I never wanted to make anything like this, I feel like I’ve let you guys down so much, I was young, I was stupid, I was careless I just wasn’t thinking.’

Richard Madeley (2021)

Last year, TV host Richard Madeley was forced to leave the castle in unusual and unfortunate circumstances. Due to Covid restrictions, production was moved to Wales rather than the usual site of Australia.

After enduring a rather yucky Bushtucker trial, Madeley began to feel unwell in the early hours of the morning and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Unfortunately, going to hospital meant that he left the camp’s secure Covid bubble.

At the time, he said: ‘I’m incredibly excited to watch the journey continue, even more so at the prospect of being somewhere warmer than Gwyrch Castle.’

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
