Ben Miller has revealed he was actually once approached to play Doctor Who, but never heard back after accepting.

The comedian, who was one half of Armstrong and Miller, has starred in Professor T and Death in Paradise.

But he was nearly down to play the Time Lord.

Appearing on The One Show today, he revealed: ‘I would have loved to have been Doctor Who.

‘I was once approached and asked if I would be interested in being Doctor Who, this is going back a few years, and I said, “Yes, I would be interested.”‘

Ben continued: ‘At which point, I never heard anything else ever again.

‘And Doctor Who became more and more successful without me.’

Ben insisted however that he wasn’t ‘bitter’, recalling that he did get to play one character, the ‘Sherrif of Nottingham’, in the episode titled ‘Robot of Sherwood’, in which he starred alongside Jenna Coleman.

While Ben may not be taking on the role, Ncuti Gatwa is gearing up to star as the 15th Doctor.

Jodie Whittaker’s final episode, The Power of the Doctor, saw the actress bow out as the 13th incarnation of the timelord, regenerating into none other than 10th Doctor star David Tennant.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies has now confirmed that Ncuti will actually play the 15th Doctor – meaning that David will officially be the 14th incarnation.

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.

Doctor Who is available to watch on BBCiPlayer.
