There’s more confusion as to whether there will be a new Call Of Duty game out next year but it’s increasingly sounding like there won’t be.

For months now the widely accepted rumour has been that there won’t be a new Call Of Duty in 2023 and that instead major new DLC will be released for this year’s Modern Warfare 2.

None of that is official though and instead Activision’s comments on the situation have always been very vague, although now they’re promising a ‘full premium Call of Duty release’ for 2023.

That’s such an odd way to describe a new game though, that it’s only reinforced rumours that there will be no standalone game next year, with the original source for the DLC rumour insisting that’s still the plan.

‘Activision is looking forward to building on its current momentum in 2023, with plans for next year including the most robust Call of Duty live operations to date, the next full premium release in the blockbuster annual series, and even more engaging free-to-play experiences across platforms,’ said Activision in a statement.

Their refusal to just say there’s going to be a new game next year already seems suspicious, especially as reports suggest that Treyarch’s next Black Ops game is still two years away.

Bloomberg writer Jason Schreier, who broke the original story about the DLC, claims that this is still the plan and that Treyarch’s game is set to release in 2024.

As such, supposedly Sledgehammer Games, the makers of Vanguard, are working on a ‘premium’ paid-for expansion that will have ‘lots of content’.

Schreier doesn’t claim to know exactly what this content is but has previously described it as including a new story campaign and a map pack intended to feature a variety of maps from the franchise’s history, as a means to mark its 20th anniversary.

There’s also been separate speculation that there could be a Zombies spin-off title, which makes sense as the mode is not a part of Modern Warfare 2.

Although Microsoft has previously said it will look at slowing down the usual, yearly release schedule the plans for 2023 have nothing to do with their acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which has not yet been confirmed.

Instead, it’s thought to be because Activision got behind during the pandemic and, combined with the failure of Vanguard, needs a year to get back on track.

Let me make this super clear:
– The next game, by Treyarch, is coming out in 2024
– Next year there will be a Modern Warfare II “premium” (paid) expansion by Sledgehammer
– It’s supposed to have lots of content! Maybe that’s why they call it a “full” release. But it’s more MWII https://t.co/jXKAiMFcTf
