Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton has showered Elizabeth Debicki with praise for her portrayal of the late royal, saying he believes that she’s deserving of a Golden Glove for her performance.

Season 5 of the Netflix drama has finally arrived on the streaming platform, introducing viewers to a new cast of actors portraying the royal family after a time jump, including Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II.

The latest episodes span from 1990 to 1997, the year that Princess Diana died in a car accident in Paris, France.

On Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain, Andrew – who released a biography of the Princess of Wales following her death titled Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words – was asked for his views on the latest portrayal of her in The Crown.

Andrew admitted he felt ‘shocked’ by Elizabeth’s performance, in a good way.

‘Well I’ve just watched the first few minutes of episode two, and quite frankly I’m deeply shocked,’ he told GMB’s Ed Balls and Susanna Reid.

‘It was like being in the room with Diana. Elizabeth Debicki and her portrayal of Diana was astonishing. I don’t say this lightly, but that performance really conveys the Diana that I got to know for a couple of years in the early 1990s.’

Susanna remarked that Andrew’s view was ‘so interesting to hear’, because she knew that Elizabeth ‘was almost overwhelmed with the responsibility of playing such an iconic character’, having taken over the role from season four star Emma Corrin.

‘She’s done a Golden Globe worth of acting there I think. She’ll be up for the awards,’ Andrew added.

The royal biographer is played in The Crown by Andrew Steele, with episode two showing Princess Diana speaking openly about suffering from bulimia while recording secret tapes for the author for his book about her life.

Charity Beat has urged people who suffer from eating disorders to avoid watching the fifth season, while also noting that the storyline can raise awareness.

‘Bulimia is a serious, complex mental illness which impacts an estimated 230,000 people in the UK,’ Beat’s director of external affairs, Tom Quinn told Metro.co.uk.

He added: ‘We wouldn’t advise that anybody currently unwell with an eating disorder watches programmes which focus on eating disorders as we know it can be upsetting.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV. The Crown season 5 is available to watch on Netflix.
