Kim Kardashian worried about potentially ruining Marilyn Monroe’s iconic gown ahead of the Met Gala – before sparking huge backlash with the outfit.

The Skims founder, 42, famously wore the Hollywood legend’s dress to this year’s exclusive bash, and was later forced to deny claims that she physically destroyed it.

Last week’s episode of the Kardashians saw Ripley’s Believe It Or Not deny her access, before momager Kris Jenner worked her magic.

In the latest instalment, cameras were on hand to capture the moment that she fit into the outfit and got permission to take it to the Met Gala.

Ahead of the big event, the mom-of-four explained that she wasn’t able to do her normal Met Gala routine as the dress was so intricate and fragile, joking that she would be forced to pay ‘millions of dollars’ if something happened to it.

‘This will be number nine for me. Nine years is really crazy,’ she told the camera. ‘I couldn’t pee in half of them, I couldn’t see. This, I can’t even walk in, I can’t sweat, I can’t breathe.

‘If one little stone falls off, I have to pay millions of dollars.’

‘I can’t walk out the hotel and walk down, they’re going to have to put up barriers,’ she said of her complicated journey to the carpet. ‘[They’ll] get me out of the hotel in a robe, they’re putting a dressing room on the red carpet and I’m going to put it on there.

‘I can’t sit in a car, I can’t risk it. It’s so fragile. This dress is like…. No one can touch me. If anyone touches me and gets their oils on the dress… It’s too risky to get in the car and leave from the hotel and do it.’

Kim was open about the fact that she was only in Marilyn’s dress for a matter of minutes on the red carpet, before switching into a replica outfit for the rest of the night.

‘All of this, the losing the weight, dyeing the hair for 30 hours, leaving the hotel in a robe, getting there, changing on the red carpet, just walking to the top of the red carpet, and then changing again into a replica of the dress – because we can’t risk sitting in it and eating dinner – is all for maybe 10 minutes of my life, just on the red carpet. That’s it,’ she continued, before touching on the possible reaction from fans.

‘I’m a little nervous some people will hate and say, “How dare she think she can step into Marilyn’s dress”. I get that.’

When Chris Appleton, who was responsible for her hair on the carpet, described her as the ‘modern day Marilyn’, she vowed: ‘I don’t want to say, “Oh, my God yeah, I’m the modern-day Marilyn”. I don’t think that.

‘I love Marilyn was a normal girl and figured it out, and became the most famous woman in the entire world. It’s just fascinating.’

‘Sounds like someone we know,’ a producer said from behind the camera, to which she offered a wry smile.

Unfortunately, her appearance sparked intense fury and huge amounts of scrutiny – after a video on social media appeared to show damage to the original dress, including ripped material and missing rhinestones.

During an appearance on the Today show, Kim was later forced to deny that she had physically destroyed the outfit by wearing it.

‘Ripley’s [and I] worked together so well, there were handlers in gloves that put it on me,’ she said at the time.

‘It was such a process…I showed up to the red carpet in a robe and slippers, and I put the dress on the bottom of the carpet, went up the stairs … I probably had it on for three minutes, four minutes.’

She added: ‘I respect [Monroe], I understand how much this dress means to American history.

‘And with the theme [of the Met Gala] being American, I thought, “What’s more American than Marilyn Monroe singing happy to the President of the United States?’

The Kardashians airs on Hulu in the US and is available to stream on Disney+ in the UK.
