The Crown viewers aren’t too happy after spotting a misspelling of Lancaster town Morecambe during an episode.

Inspired by real events, the fictional dramatisation tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign.

The highly-anticipated new series dropped to Netflix on Wednesday, following the breakdown of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage, and the Royal Family being presented with their biggest challenge yet as the public openly question their role in 90s Britain.

Imelda Staunton takes over from Olivia Coleman as Queen Elizabeth II, while Elizabeth Debicki plays Princess Diana and Dominic West as the future King.

The new series has so-far been embroiled in controversy, with Dame Judi Dench labelling it ‘crude sensationalism’, while former Prime Ministers Sir Tony Blair and Sir John Major have also slammed the show.

However, now viewers have spotted an inaccuracy – and it has nothing to do with the storyline.

Imelda Staunton plays the Queen (Picture: Netflix/Keith Bernstein)

During the first episode, the Queen makes a speech outside a dairy factory to workers, reflecting a real speech set in 1991 when the late Queen visited the Lancaster village of Warton, which is near Morecambe.

Giving her speech, Imelda’s character is stood beside an advert bearing the word: ‘Morecombe’.

And the misspelling didn’t go unnoticed.

@TheCrownNetflix seriously? You do know that ‘Morecombe’ doesn’t exist and ‘Morecambe’ does? Think you need to sack a few researchers. I’m shocked such a schoolgirl error was made. Bet you thought no one would notice…. #TheCrown #netflix #morecambe #lancashire pic.twitter.com/sVEbpxOezS

You spend $13 million an episode, and nobody checks how to spell Morecambe https://t.co/5UrKFWcSdd

The series, which will be the show’s penultimate, will see Dominic’s Prince Charles pressure his mother to allow him to divorce Diana, as he and Camilla grow closer.

Rumours circulate the royals as the husband and wife are seen to live increasingly separate lives, and ‘as media scrutiny intensifies, Diana decides to take control of her own narrative, breaking with family protocol to publish a book that undermines public support for Charles and exposes the cracks in the House of Windsor.’

The Crown is available to watch on Netflix.
