Peter Kay fans have expressed their utter horror over the prices that tickets are already being resold for online, with some topping hundreds of pounds and even surpassing £1,000.

After a 12-year hiatus, the acclaimed comedian is returning for a comeback tour, which will also include a month-long residency at London’s O2 arena.

Demand for tickets to his shows has been stupendous, with some claiming on Twitter that when they went online to try to bag seats, they found there were 200,000 people in front of them in the queue.

On Saturday morning, when numerous people were still waiting patiently in virtual queues eagerly awaiting their turn to reach the checkout, tickets that had been purchased were already being touted online for extortionate costs, on social media and on the resale site Viagogo.

For example, Metro.co.uk found a ticket for Peter’s December 16 show this year going for £1,180 per ticket on the website.

After announcing his tour, the comic emphasised that he wanted to keep prices down given the current financial climate, stating: ‘With the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.’

While this statement didn’t reference a cap on prices, several people have called out those striving to resell tickets for fortunes amid the cost of living crisis.

‘So @peterkay_co_uk has tried to liaise with the general public by setting his prices low because of the cost of living crisis….just for them to be sold on for ten times more? @viagogo should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for these staggering prices,’ one person tweeted, sharing a screenshot of tickets going for over £340 each.

‘Disgusting how many tickets have been bought to resell for a ridiculous price for Peter Kay. Especially as he priced tickets to help people with cost of living,’ someone else said.

Resale of @peterkay_co_uk tickets already on @viagogo for Cardiff, some over a £1000 already, only been on sale since 10am! Have a word!!! #peterkay #peterkaytour #peterkaytickets

One person on Twitter who managed to buy eight tickets admitted they had a face value of £57.75 each – but was openly selling them for £400 each, or £3,200 for the lot.

Another critic of the resell system lamented sarcastically: ‘Anyone who’s a genuine Peter Kay fan and who’s sat for an hour this morning to get tickets – don’t worry, ViaGoGo have them at the cheap cheap price at £400 for 2.
