Good Morning Britain guest Andrew Pierce has slated David Beckham for being a paid ambassador for Qatar where homosexuality is illegal.
Beckham has come under fire in recent weeks over his controversial position, with Joe Lycett demanding that he forfeits his role before the World Cup 2022 gets underway next week.
If the former footballer fails to comply with Lycett’s proposition, the comedian has vowed to shred £10,000 of his own money on a live stream as well as shred the sports star’s status as a ‘gay icon’.
Presenters Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley discussed the pressure facing Beckham on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, prompting political journalist Pierce, who is a regular feature on the programme, to hit out.
‘As you know I don’t watch football, but I would not go to that country as a gay man because I would be very worried,’ he said.

Pierce continued: ‘As for David Beckham, he should be hanging his head in shame. He is a gay icon, hugely popular around the world, and he’s doing this for one reason: millions in the bank.’
In August, Beckham confirmed his reported £10million deal with an advert promoting Qatar tourism released in September ahead of the major sporting event.

In a video message, comedian Lycett addressed Beckham directly and called for him to end his relationship with Qatar.
‘If you end your relationship with Qatar, I will donate ten grand of my own money (that’s a grand for every million you’re reportedly getting) to charities that support queer people in football,’ he said.
‘However, if you do not, I will throw the money into a shredder at midday next Sunday, just before the opening ceremony of the World Cup and stream it right here. Not just the money, but also your status as gay icon will be shredded.’
