Nicholas Hoult has opened up on the importance of intimacy coordinators after admitting the sex scenes on Skins were a ‘weird position to be in’.

The actor has been on screen since he was a child, and has seen huge differences in filmmaking over the years, including the introduction of intimacy coordinators.

Asked by Metro.co.uk at the premiere of his new film The Menu whether he wished he had an intimacy coordinator on Skins, Nicholas said: ‘Oh yeah, I’ve been working with intimacy coordinators now for the past two or three productions I’ve been on and it’s a brilliant addition to the crew.

‘It’s someone who can really help the storytelling through those inmate scenes and be additive to it. So it’s been a big aid.’

Nicholas, now 32, was 17 when he started out on Skins, starring as Tony Stonem from 2007 to 2008.

He previously told GQ Hype of the sex scenes on the Channel 4 teen drama: ‘Back then you’re a kid doing a job, and I’d done it for a long time at that point, but it’s also a weird position to be put in.

‘Not that they were bad experiences or anything… It comes much more from, “Just get this done as quickly as possible so I can be comfortable again and carry on with the part of acting I like.” A lot of acting is pretty terrifying.’

Having forged an incredible career for himself after Skins, Nicholas is now starring in The Menu with Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes.

The film follows a young couple (Anya and Nicholas) who travel to a remote island to eat at Hawthorne, an exclusive restaurant run by celebrity chef Julian Slowik (Ralph).

He recalled improvising with Anya on set (Picture: David M. Benett/Dave Benett/WireImage)

However, the chef has some shocking surprises in store for his guests.

The way it was filmed meant that Anya and Nicholas had to be ‘on’ for up to 12 hours per day.

‘We would be in character for the first couple of days, you’d be trying to improvise, but then after a couple of days you’d be like, “I haven’t got 12 hours of improvisation of this character!”‘ Nicholas recalled.

‘So we kind of just started to be somewhat ourselves and the characters at the same time. ‘

The Menu is set for release on November 18.
