Jay Leno has revealed he has suffered ‘serious burns’ as a result of a petrol fire.

The former host of The Tonight Show said he would need some time to recover after it was reported he sustained facial injuries when one of the cars at his LA garage ‘erupted into flames without warning’.

Further details about the incident were not given, though Leno is famed for his car collection housed in Burbank, north of Los Angeles.

‘I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire,’ he said in a statement. ‘I am ok.’

The 72-year-old continued to the PA news agency: ‘Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.’

According to TMZ, the flames burned the left side of Leno’s face, but thankfully did not penetrate his eye or his ear.

The television star is currently staying at the burn ward at Grossman Burn Centre and receiving treatment.

He was set to appear at The Financial Brand conference in Las Vegas on Sunday, but organisers announced shortly before the event that he wouldn’t be able to make it.

‘His family was not able to provide us very many details, but there was a very serious medical emergency that is preventing Jay from traveling,’ their statement said.

‘All we know is that he is alive, so our prayers go out to him and his family tonight.’
